    Est: £1,500 - £2,000

Antonio Maria Blanco (Filipino, 1927-1999) The Portrait of my Balinese Father-in-Law signed 'Blanco' (lower right), inscribed 'Bali' (lower left)oil on canvas33 x 23cm (13 x 9 1/16in). Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 22 March 2000, lot 74.A label bearing Blanco's studio stamp on the reverse of the painting includes comments from the artist about this work:'Painted in the year 1962, this sketch in oil colors is of my best male model in Bali: namely I Kebbak (my Balinese wife's father). His intense expression required something delicate which I think I accomplished by painting a little gold earing called in Balinese: "Bungkung Kuping". Men in the real-Bali-of-old wore such little earings. I hope that it will find harmony in the home of Commander John Patrick David & his wife in its hand carved frame whose incised designs were taken from Temple decorations in Bali.'The painting is still housed in the same frame referenced in this text.

    May. 17, 2017

    Antonio Blanco (1911-1999)

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Antonio Blanco (1911-1999) Balinese boy with hibiscus / Kebang Spatu signed upper left oil on canvas, 51x43 cm Provenance: Blanco Studio of Art, 47 West 12 Street, New York Antonio Blanco was born on September 15, 1911, in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Both of his parents were Spanish, a fact that Blanco believed linked him geographically and spiritually to Miro and Salvador Dali. His father settled in Manila during the Spanish - American War, where he attained prominence as a physician. Blanco was educated at the American Central School in Manila. During his high school years he loved the arts, literature and language classes. It is no wonder that he spoke six languages - Spanish, French, English, Tagalog, Indonesian and a bit of Balinese. After completing high school in Manila, Blanco studied at the National Academy of Art in New York under Sidney Dickinson. During those early formative years, Blanco concentrated on the human form, fascinated by the female body more than any other subject matter. To further his studies and ignite his traveling spirit, he traveled extensively throughout the world before he finally landed in Bali in 1952.The King of Ubud gave Blanco a piece of land to set up his home and studio in Campuan, Ubud, at the confluence of two sacred rivers. Blanco and his Balinese wife, the celebrated dancer Ni Ronji, lived in their mountain retreat, barely leaving it for the world outside. Following a brief trip to the United States, where Blanco acquired many new collectors, the couple never left their fantasy home again. Living in serene surroundings with his four children, Tjempaka, Mario, Orchid and Maha Devi, Bali became Blanco's center. He was fascinated by the island and completely captivated by its charm. Blanco lived and worked in his magical hilltop home until his death in 1999, feverishly creating his fantasy portraits of beautiful women. Surrounded by lush gardens, rice fields and with a Banyan tree standing over his family's temple, Antonio Blanco proceeded to create a new reality for himself. His artistic outpourings of this isolated world became much sought after by eager art lovers, collectors and promoters. Within a few years, Blanco became the most famous foreign artist to make Bali his home. He was recognized in both Indonesia and abroad, receiving numerous awards and commanding huge prizes at international auctions. By the end of his life, Blanco had begun building his museum at his studio in Campuan. Dramatically, he died just before its inauguration. His funeral was marked by a very important cremation in Ubud. It was Blanco's dream to turn his studio-mansion into a museum. His son, Mario, fulfilled this dream by following his path to become a painter.

It is dedicated to Michael and Janet Berolzheimer when they purchased the Blanco self portrait. Condition: Very GoodProvenance: Private Collection, United States; Purchased from the artist in 1992. Biography: The story of Antonio Blanco is one of dreams and adventure, and begins on September 15, 1912. Blanco was born in Manila to Spanish parents who had fled the Spanish-American War. His father was a prominent physician who sent his son to the American Central School in Manila for his education, where they boy excelled art, literature and languages. Blanco would acquire six languages in total; French, English, Spanish, Tagalog, Indonesian and some Balinese. After highschool, he would travel to New York to study at the National Academy of Art under Sidney Dickinson. His strongest interest in subject matter was the human form, especially composition of the female anatomy. After the Academy, he went on to work and live in both Florida and California and eventually traveled to the islands of the Pacific. He spent time in Hawaii, Japan and Cambodia where he would be the guest of honor to Prince Norodom Sihanouk. By 1952, Blanco arrived at the shores of Bali. However, as soon as he stepped ashore he realized all his belongings had been stolen. With no identification or money, he survived by his talent and charm, stealing the favor of the King of Ubud, Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati. Blanco would marry a native dancer of significant celebrity, Ni Ronji, by the following year. His new wife, her culture and stunning homeland would be the final key to Blanco’s quest for artistic inspiration. He became deeply enamoured with Bali’s people, scenery, and the unique atmosphere full of color, sweeping panoramic views and plentiful availability of stunning female subjects. Finally home, Blanco quickly set to constructing a house for his bride and himself, as well as a studio. His new friend, King Sukawati, gifted land to the artist which was situated high on a hillside in Campuan, surrounded by lush gardens at the crux of two sacred rivers. Blanco had everything he needed to hide away and create his energetic paintings day in and day out. Over the next nearly 50 years, his continuous efforts in creation bred a significant body of work that was appreciated and highly desired across the globe, despite his tendency to always stay home with his lovely wife and growing family in their gorgeous mansion. He would, in fact, become the most famous working foreign artist in Bali, developing a wide gambit of celebrity collectors from Ingrid Bergman and President Sukarno of Indonesia to Michael Jackson and telenovela star Ariadna Thalia Sodi Miranda. His high energy, smooth charisma and theatrical personality gained him the nickname “The Fabulous Blanco” to many across the art world. Throughout his lifetime, Blanco received tremendous accolades; from the Tiffany Fellowship from The Society of Honolulu Artists and the Chevalier du Sahametrai of Cambodia to the Society of Painters of Fine Art Quality of President Sukarno and the Prize of the Art Critique in Spain. The King of Spain, Juan Carlos, even awarded Blanco the order of Cruz de Caballero, thereby adding the title “Don” to his name. Blanco is best known for his works featuring indigenous women of Bali, highlighting the essence of femininity with a dreamlike romanticism with highly expressive strokes. In December, 1998, a great dream of Blanco’s came true with the beginning development of The Blanco Renaissance Museum at his residence. Over 300 paintings were displayed in chronological order, illustrating

Bali, 1999 BALINESE FANTASY, undated Watercolour on paper 62cm x 47cm Born in the Philippines in 1911 to Spanish parents, Antonio Blanco travelled the globe and studied at the National Academy of Art in New York. The artist arrived in Bali in 1952 and married Ni Ronji, a locally famous dancer. He was given land overlooking the Campuan River by the King of Ubud and made a impressive sanctuary out of this hilltop retreat. The mix of Balinese and Spanish architecture is astonishing. He studied at the Fine Arts Academy in New York, and was later professionally based in Florida and California. He has been honoured by several international art organisations. His awards include the Tiffany Fellowship, New York; La Cofradia del Arrios, Spain; and Chevalier du Sahanetrei from Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia. He lived in Ubud, Bali from 1952 until his death in 1999. Antonio Blanco is renowned for his flamboyant personality and lavish taste. Such characteristics are translated by the sensual bodies of his models in his paintings.
