Oil on canvas, laid down on wood Spain, Madrid, 1834 Henri Pierre Léon Pharamond Blanchard (1805-1873) – French lithographer, and painter of landscapes and historical subjects Signed, inscribed and dated lower left ‘Pharamond Blanchard, Madrid, 1834’ Dimensions: 155 x 120 cm Provenance: Private collection, Sweden Blanchard is known as a Costumbrismo painter, a movement from c. 1830 until the mid-19th century depicting the customs and practices of Spanish society; the current highest hammer price for a painting by the artist is set at more than €162,000 This is a painting by the French artist Pharamond Blanchard, who is known for his Costumbrismo subject matters. This movement was devoted to depicting the customs and practices of Spanish society from around 1830 until the mid-19th century. Blanchard had travelled several times to Madrid and debuted in 1834, the same as he created the present painting, at the Salon in Paris with a painting of a bullfighting scene. Here depicted is in almost life-size a condemned elderly man with white hair and chains on his feet, who is receiving the last blessing from a monk. The figures step forward from the dark background in a fresh complexion and detailed rendition of the subject. The painting is signed, inscribed and dated lower left ‘Pharamond Blanchard, Madrid, 1834’. The canvas has been laid down on wood. There are small fissures in the canvas due to the framing, the canvas is coming off the mount in the upper center. There are small color chips and craquelure. The painting has been touched-up in sections. The frame shows split-offs. The stretcher measures 155 x 120 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 169 x 136 cm. Henri Pierre Léon Pharamond Blanchard (1805-1873) Pharamond Blanchard comes from La Guillotière, a suburb of Lyon. He was trained under the neo-classical Napoleonic painter Antoine-Jean Gros at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During journeys to Mexico, North Africa and Russia he was able to develop his style. In Mexico, he was part of the French expedition from 1858 until 1859. When he was in Russia in 1856, he was present at the coronation of Alexander II. The main part of his work comprises lithograph. He worked for a few newspapers, for example L’Illustration in Paris. He published the work L'Itinéraire Historique et Descriptif de Paris à Constantinople in 12 plates in 1855. THE PROPERTY OF STAIR SAINTY TROPICAL LANDSCAPE WITH PAUL AND VIRGINIE measurements note 15 6/8 by 23 5/8 in.; 40.5 by 60 cm. signed and dated lower left BLANCHARD 1844 oil on canvas PROVENANCE Private collection, France, from whom purchased by Stair Sainty. EXHIBITED New Orleans, New Orleans Museum of Art; New York, Stair Sainty Matthiesen Inc.; Cincinnati, Taft Museum, Romance and Chivalry: History and Literature Reflected in Early Nineteenth Century Painting, June 23, 1996 - February 12, 1997, no. 3. NOTE Blanchard's extensive travels in such exotic locales as Mexico, Brazil, North Africa and the Near East had an enormous impact on his outlook and on his art, especially in his mastery of exotic species of flora and fauna. Bernadin de Saint Pierre's novel Paul et Virginie, first published in 1788, rapidly became the most important literary success of its time. The story of two French-born children who grow up on the exotic island of Mauritius carried tremendous appeal with French readers, then and now. In this picture, the two youths are represented as Paul helps Virginie fashion boots out of leaves on their way to attempt to help a runaway slave. The figures, however, are shown in very small scale in relation to the luxuriant surrounding landscape, to which Blanchard devoted the better part of his canvas, reproducing specific cacti and palms among other vegetal species, which he must have known from his travels, and recorded for later use.
