Painter, b. 1881 - d. 1932

María Blanchard (born María Gutiérrez Cueto[1] 6 March 1881 – 5 April 1932),[2] was a Spanish painter. She was known for developing a unique style of Cubism.

Blanchard was born on 6 March 1881 in Santander, Spain.[3] She was the daughter of journalist Enrique Gutiérrez Cueto and Concepción Blanchard Santisteban. She was the cousin of Mexican artist Germán Cueto.[1]

She was born with several physical deformities, including a deformed spine,[4][5] which some attributed to Blanchard's mother's fall during her pregnancy. Blanchard was born with kyphoscoliosis and bilateral hip disarticulation. Her growth was stunted and she walked with a limp, causing her to be teased at school and nicknamed "the witch,".[6] The emotional pain this caused can be seen in many of her artworks' themes.[1] Blanchard turned to painting to express her sadness.[7] Her father was a large influence in her life, encouraging her to draw.[8]

In 1903, she moved to Madrid and studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando under Spanish artists such as Emilio Sala and Manuel Benedito [es].[1] Sala taught Blanchard "precision" and the "exuberant use of colour," which would feature in her early compositions.[1] In 1908, after Blanchard won a third prize for her painting Primeros pasos at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts,[9] the Santander government awarded her a grant to support her education in the arts.[1] In 1909, this grant allowed her to continue her artistic education at the Academie Vitti in Paris under Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa and Kees van Dongen.[10] Here she discovered cubist painting, and was influenced by Jacques Lipchitz and Juan Gris.[10][11] In 1914, due to the First World War, Blanchard left Paris returned to Madrid. She shared a studio in her mother's house with some of the artists she met in Paris[12] In 1915, her art was displayed in an exhibition organized by Ramón Gómez de la Serna[1] at the Museo de Arte Moderno (Madrid). She was contacted to teach art in Salamanca (Madrid), but was disappointed by the experience and ultimately moved back to Paris.[8]

In 1918, after the end of the war, Blanchard moved to Paris, where she would spend the rest of her life.[1] There, she met many Cubist artists and began developing her own style of Cubism.[1] She became close friends with Juan Gris, a Spanish Cubist painter, who heavily influenced her work.[1] Blanchard joined the Section d'Or, a Cubist art group[13] Early paintings, such as "Woman With a Fan" [1], show flat, interlocked shapes.[13] Her unique style evolved to become more figurative and traditional over the years; her paintings became harsh, with bright clashing colors and melancholic themes.[13] The resulting artwork was very emotionally expressive.

Demand for Blanchard's art skyrocketed after the showings 1920 in France and Belgium, and the 1921 exhibition at the Society of Independent Artists.[13] She came into contact with significant art dealers, but due to the adverse economic situation which followed, many collectors stopped investing in her work. She became financially dependent on her friend, Frank Flausch (1878–1926) until his death.[1] Without Flaush, Blanchard was able to sell paintings to galleries in Paris and a few private patrons.

In 1927, Gris died.[1] Blanchard was severely affected and fell into a state of depression.[4] Her sister, Carmen, and nephews came to live with her in Paris, alleviating her loneliness but worsening her financial situation.[13] In her deteriorating health, Blanchard turned to religion and considered joining a convent, but never did.[6] She continued painting to support her sister and nephews.

Blanchard's health gradually declined over the following years. She contracted tuberculosis, making it impossible for her to paint. On 5 April 1932, she died at age 51 in Paris.

          Est: €25,000 - €30,000

MARÍA GUTIÉRREZ BLANCHARD (Santander 1881 - Paris 1932). "Still life". Pastel on paper adhered to canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 53 x 64 cm; 58 x 68 cm (frame). It is well known that Maria Blanchard made several versions of the same subject using different techniques. In this particular case the work presents the same composition as the painting referenced in the artist's catalog Volume II, Liliane Caffin Madaule, entitled "Nature Morte", on page 238. The work was acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts of Santander from a private individual in 1985. According to the catalog we could date this painting around 1930 because Maria's sister found it in the studio when the artist died and sold it around 1936. This indicates that this work belongs to the same period. In 1933, in an exhibition of the painter's works organized by the Spanish Tourist Office, the catalog read: "Still Life with Basket". In this still life of cubist composition, the artist shows us a scene of warm tones and ambiguous lighting. Like Cézanne, this work shows her heritage, as the artist presents nature in a synthesized way, reduced to its basic, geometric and simple forms. However, she seeks to go beyond the synthesis between naturalism and Cézanne's pictorial order by capturing different points of view in a single image; the synthesis is no longer reduced to what the eye sees, but to what the mind knows to be there and makes up the totality of the image, not in a physical but in an intellectual way. However, Blanchard does not abandon realism, but forms a still life of recognizable forms, heir to the portrait tradition and also brings a mature vision, typical of his last stage, defined through the use of a broad brushstroke, fast and vibrant, thus obtaining a work that stands out for its expressionist aesthetic. María Gutierrez Blanchard, usually known by her mother's surname, trained as a painter in Madrid, where she moved in 1903. Here she studied under the guidance of the painters Emilio Sala and Álvarez de Sotomayor. In 1909 she obtained a scholarship from the Diputación de Santander to study in Paris. In the French capital he received classes from Anglada Camarasa and Kees van Dongen, freeing him from his academic training and introducing him fully into the world of avant-garde art. In 1914 he returned to Madrid and began to attend Ramón Gómez de la Serna's gatherings at the Pombo café, participating in the controversial exhibition "Pintores íntegros". After devoting himself temporarily to teaching in Salamanca, in 1916 he returned definitively to Paris. From that year until 1920 he developed a cubist stage in which figurative references never disappeared. He was part of the Parisian cubist group and became friends with some of its members, such as Juan Gris, Lipchitz and André Lhote. In the 1920s he exhibited in exhibitions organized in Paris and Belgium. Among the works of his first stage stands out "The Communicant", presented with great success at the Salon des Indépendants in 1921. Between 1920 and 1932 he returned to a type of figurative painting, although cubist from the compositional point of view, in which the light treatment generates cottony textures. In Spain there have been two anthologies dedicated to the painter, one at the Biosca Gallery in Madrid (1962) and the other at the former Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art (1982). Maria Blanchard was both a great painter and a theoretician, since she organized gatherings in her Paris apartment, where different artists, among them Juan Gris, discussed painting and the new trends that were taking place at the time.

Work included in the Catalogue Raisonné "Blanchard Catalogue Raisonné" by Liliane Caffin Madaule. Work exhibited in Aarau Kunstmuseum no. 307. Retains informative labels on the back. Provenance; Ricco Hediger Reinach Collection. Damaged and missing in the frame. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 60 x 50 cm; 82 x 70 cm (frame). The subtlety and elegance of this portrait harmonises with an exceptional technical mastery, which can be appreciated in the play of the use of colour with which she creates the volume of the face and the scarcity of strokes that the artist needs to create a realistic portrait. The author presents us with a work in which she brings together all the plastic experiences that formed part of her artistic career. For this reason Blanchard conceives a portrait of cubist heritage, an influence that can be seen in the chromatic range based on ochres and greys, although Blanchard does not abandon realism, but creates a portrait of recognisable forms, heir to the portrait tradition and also contributes a mature vision, typical of her last stage, defined through the use of a broad, rapid and vibrant brushstroke, thus obtaining a work that stands out for its expressionist aesthetic. In this portrait made in the last year of the artist's life, the author presents us with a work in which she unites and harmonizes all the plastic experiences that were part of her artistic trajectory. For this reason Blanchard conceives a portrait of cubist heritage, an influence that can be seen in the chromatic range based on ochers and grays, and in the treatment of the background, which seems to pounce on the figure, totally reducing the spatiality. However, Blanchard does not abandon realism, but forms a portrait of recognizable forms, heir to the portrait tradition and also brings a mature vision, typical of his last stage, defined through the use of a broad, fast and vibrant brushstroke, thus obtaining a work that stands out for its expressionist aesthetic. (Santander 1881–1931 Paris) A Baby with Rattle, signed M Blanchard, oil on canvas, 46 x 38 cm, framed Provenance: Collection of Elie Burthoul (1875-1948), Brussels; his sale, Galerie Georges Giroux, Brussels, 11 March 1950 (on the reverse wax seal); Private Collection Belgium. Exhibited: Brussels, Galerie Georges Giroux, Exposition de l’Art vivant dans les collections privées belges, 2-19 June, 1947. Marie Blanchard was one of the most accomplished Spanish female artists to reside in early twentieth century Paris. She was born in Santander in 1881 and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid under Emilio Sala (1850-1910). In 1909, she was granted a scholarship to study in Paris, where she trained at the Vitti Academy under Anglada Camarasa (1871-1959). In 1914, the outbreak of the First World War led her to return to Madrid, where she shared a studio in her mother’s house with artists she met in Paris. She moved back to Paris in 1918 and spent the rest of her life there. She found immediate success in 1921 at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and met important art dealers who provided her with access to a broader market. This painting was exhibited at the Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels in 1947. The gallery was founded in Brussels in 1912 and became one of the most important art galleries in Belgium during the first half of the twentieth century. Having no children of her own, scenes with babies were amongst Maria Blanchard’s most frequently painted subjects. Here, she paints a sensitive portrait of a baby playing with his rattle. She was a prolific artist who enjoyed international success during her lifetime.
