LOUIS AMMY BLANC (1810-1885) Jeune garçon au faucon A Young Boy with a Falcon, oil on unlined canvas 60,3 x 50,3 cm with inventory stamp and number on the reverse of the stretcher: S 127. Provenance: Property of a distinguished noble family, bought from the artist, by descent to the previous owner until 1989. Catalogue eassay: probably commissioned by the Princes Solms-Braunfels directly from the artist. It certainly depicts one of the young princes. Solms-Braunfels was a high noble family existing in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Bohemia, which became extinct in the male line in 1989. The Berlin-born Louis Ammy Blanc (1810-1885) was a successful portrait and genre painter in his time and is mainly known for his images of Biedermeier and the religious and romantic scenes from everyday life. Blanc started his artistic education at the end of the 1820s studying at the Berliner Akademie and some years later he changed to Düsseldorf and became a pupil of Julius Hübner. He stayed in Düsseldorf and ran a studio there. The manner of painting of the artist is characterized by the technical perfection, the quality of distinction and detail of his depictions and the concinnity of his art. The simple and dignified portraits and the partially magical motives met the spirit of the 19th century – shaped by romanticism and Biedermeier.

Signed and dated lower right: L. Blanc. 1879. After his training until the master class at the Berlin and Düsseldorf Art Academies from 1829-1840, Louis Ammy Blanc worked for a time as court painter in Hanover and Darmstadt, but Düsseldorf remained the focus of his career until the end of his life. He first found success as a genre painter, but over time he began increasingly to paint motifs based on the works of Goethe and Uhland in the tradition of Düsseldorf's "literary painting" style. Scenes from mythology such as the present work only began to appear in his later oeuvre. At the beginning of this story, found in Ovid's "Metamorphoses", it is told that the young lovers Pyramus and Thisbe are not allowed to see each other because of their parents' rivalry. This work depicts Thisbe standing by the wall that separated the two families' houses, and between the ivy tendrils we see the crack through which she was able to speak to Pyramus.

They tell us in posture and expression something about the self-confidence and the self-understanding of this upcoming Bremen merchant family at the beginning of the second half of the 19th century. Condition: The varnish has been darkened and tiny craquelé can be seen on the canvas. Both paintings shows scratches and scattered loss of material: Mainly affecting the female portrait in the upper right part and mainly affecting the male portrait in the middle and the lower part. Both paintings show marks, that is especially affecting the male image. There are areas with scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas. The overall impression is still good. The frame shows traces of usage as scratches, marks and loss of material is affecting several parts. The dimensions are c. 94 x 80.8 cm and the frame measures 136 x 112 cm. LOUIS AMMY BLANC (1810-1885) THE FALCONER signed, dated 1850 and inscribed Dusseldorf, 90 x 77cm Exhibited: (possibly) Royal Academy, 1850, No 599, as 'Flora McIvor.' Blanc's two Royal Academy exhibits were both shown in 1850, the date of the present picture. Given the presence of a contemporary London trade label on the frame, it is possible that the clearly passionate young female falconer could be Scott's dark heroine from 'Waverley'. So profound was this historical novel's influence in early-mid 19th century Britain and Europe, with the notions of honour and justice over rank, principles held dear by the Romantics, that it was the subject of intense interest by the foremost minds of the day, including Goethe. Blanc is recorded as having shown a picture of'Fora McIvor and Kathleen waiting for Waverley' at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of the Industry of all Nations in 1850, that seems less likely to be the same as the RA picture.
