William (1757) Blake Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, copperplate engraver, b. 1757 - d. 1827

English artist William Blake (b.1757) trained under James Basire, and studied for a short time at the Royal Academy of London. William Blake's watercolor paintings, such as Angel of the Revelations (Book of Revelations Chapter 10), were his own interpretations of scenes from the Bible. His early critics mocked William Blake's paintings for sale, believing that he was insane because he claimed he had visions and could speak to angels.

William Blake's art prints were revered for the unique use of mixed medium; he would first do a watercolor painting and then pen and ink were used, or vice versa. Although he is best-known for his poetry, William Blake's watercolor paintings became popular after his death and are even displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (unframed).  Note:  The present work exhibits a similarity to Blake's 'Visionary Heads', a series of drawings created by the artist in the company of the astronomer and watercolourist John Varley (1778-1842). Blake's drawings depict figures, many of whom were historical, Biblical, or mythological, who appeared to the artist in visions during meetings with Varley. The clean, curved lines, used to sharply delineate the present figure's profile, is typical of Blake's drawings.

Linnell from Mr. Blake’ bottom right; also titled ‘SOLOMON’ bottom center, pencil on paper Sight size: 10 x 8 in. (25.4 x 20.3cm) Provenance The Artist. A gift from the Artist. Collection of John Linnell. Christie's, London, sale of March 15, 1918, lot 163 or 165. Collection of George C. Smith, Jr. Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, sale of November 2, 1938, lot 105. Collection of Morris Wolf, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.  Private Collection, Philadelphia. Exhibition Pennsylvania Museum of Art, Fairmount, Pennsylvania.  Lot Essay The present drawing – a rare original work by the British artist, poet, visionary, and mystic William Blake - has been known and recorded since its creation, circa 1819-20. It depicts King Solomon and is one of three recorded head and shoulders bust portraits by Blake as recorded by Butlin. In Rossetti’s ‘Descriptive Catalogue’ of 1863, Solomon is described as: “Age about forty; a piercing, reflective, sensuous Jewish head, the eye exceedingly far back from the line of the nose, the chin blunt and very large. Admirable.” While Pre-Raphaelite stalwart Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s publication was a tribute to Blake’s genius, the present work shows the close ties between the Blake and the landscape and portrait painter, John Linnell (1792-1882). It is, according to Butlin, inscribed ‘SOLOMON’ by Linell at bottom center. This drawing is also inscribed ‘J Linnell from Mr Blake’ at bottom right. About a year before Blake drew the present work, he and Linnell first met and the two would remain friends until Blake’s death in 1827. While Blake was 61 and Linnell only 26 when they were introduced, Linnell played a pivotal role in the final years of Blake’s life, serving as a patron to Blake, and giving the artist a renewed relevancy, commissioning Blake to complete a set of engravings for the ‘Book of Job’ and purchasing Blake’s watercolors illustrating ‘Paradise Regained.’ Linnell also introduced Blake to a younger generation of English artists, including his future son-in-law, Samuel Palmer. A miniature watercolor on ivory depicting Blake and painted by Linnell is in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

RELIGIOUS ENGLISH COLORED PRINT BY WILLIAM BLAKE

            Est: $100 - $150

William Blake, English, 1757 to 1827, colored print on wove paper finished in pen and watercolor, Satan Watching the Caresses of Adam and Eve, illustration for John Miltons, Paradise Lost, 1808. William Blake and John Milton lived through two of the most tumultous periods of European history, so perhaps it is not surprising that Blake would have been drawn to illustrate Miltons great epic. Blake completed sets of water color illustrations to Paradise Lost. William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his life, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age. BLAKE, William (1757-1827), illustrator – YOUNG, Edward (1683-1765) The Complaint, and The Consolation; or, Night Thoughts . London: R. Noble for R. Edwards, 1797. BLAKE, William (1757-1827), illustrator – YOUNG, Edward (1683-1765) /The Complaint, and The Consolation; or, Night Thoughts/. London: R. Noble for R. Edwards, 1797. *First illustrated edition of Young’s poetry, with etched and engraved titles and borders throughout by Blake.* Young wrote /The Complaint, and The Consolation or Night Thoughts/ in the 1740s, and when this illustrated edition was published by Richard Edwards his poetry was still extraordinarily popular, whereas Blake was a 38 year-old engraver known to only a few. Although Blake set out to illustrate all nine of the ‘Nights,’ and completed 537 watercolour designs in less than two years, this volume, containing the first four parts of the poem with 43 of his designs, was the only one to appear. The present copy contains the 'Explanation' leaf, which is frequently lacking. As Bentley notes, ‘the paper was only marginally larger than the copperplate, and even in untrimmed copies ... parts of the platemark may not appear.’ Bentley 515; Butlin, pp. 66 -71; Keynes 200. Quarto (415 x 323mm). ‘Explanation of Engravings’ leaf at end, 4 engraved part titles and 39 etched and engraved pictorial borders by and after Blake (pp.13-14 with repaired tear into text but without loss and with lower corner defective just into engraved border, tiny wormhole at gutter running throughout, pp.39-40 with tiny chip to lower corner but not into border, light browning throughout, last few leaves with dark stain affecting lower fore-edge). Contemporary ?Spanish calf, panelled in gilt with an outer foliate border, upper cover lettered in gilt in English, gilt edges (rebacked preserving original spine, extremities rubbed). /Provenance/: ?Mirem (ink ownership inscription on title) – Eduardo J. Bullrich (1885-1951, of Buenos Aires, morocco gilt booklabel) – Sir Robert Henry Edward Abdy, 5th Baronet (1896-1976); pencilled note on flyleaf that the book was presented in about 1946 to: – Clarissa Spencer-Churchill.

The Eagle (A Series of Ballads [by William Hayley], Number 2), 1st edition, Chichester: Printed by Seagrave... for W. Blake, Felpham, 1802, 9 leaves: full-page engraved frontispiece printed by Blake, with imprint 'Published July 1 1802 by W Blake Felpham' ,and 16 pages of text (signatures D-E4) on pale cream thick wove paper (watermarked 1802), including two further plates engraved and printed by Blake: a head-piece and tail-piece at the beginning and end of the printed text, original tissue-guard to each plate, light paper toning, untrimmed, stitched as issued in pale blue paper wrappers, with printed title to upper cover, some minor fraying to edges of covers and extreme sheet edges, light spotting and marks to covers, slim 4to (29.5 x 23.5 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: Bentley 466.6; Easson & Essick, William Blake: Book Illustrator VI, 6; Bindman, The Complete Graphic Works of William Blake, 391. Frontispiece and two illustrations to the second in a series of animal ballads written by Blake's patron William Hayley and published in parts by Blake in 1802. The letterpress was printed by Seagrave, printer in Chichester, with the engravings printed by Blake and his wife Catherine on their own roller press at the cottage in Felpham, Sussex where the Blakes had moved in 1800. Hayley wrote the ballads in an attempt to help Blake make money through the sale of the illustrated work, but the scheme seems to have been a financial failure for which Blake bore most of the costs. This first quarto edition of the animal ballads was followed in 1805 by an octavo edition (in an attempt to recover costs).
