Image: 39"H x 105"W; Sheet: 40"H x 107.875"W; Frame: 45.75"H x 113.375"W. PROVENANCE: Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, TX. Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, TX. Collection of J.C. Penney Company, represented by Russell Tether Fine Arts Assoc. NOTE: In 1984, Woodrow Blagg was commissioned by two Dallas businessmen to create a body of work for an art exhibition to be held in 1986, one of which was "Three Jacks". Noted as one of his first forays into large scale drawing, Blagg pays tribute to his time spent in North Texas on the Wagonner Ranch, coined as "the largest ranch under one fence". He notes that he was inspired by the openness and vast track of space at the ranch, as well as the history of its land. Drawing on these themes, Blagg creates a work that illustrates the energy and intensity surrounding the cattle herding he witnessed. In this work, we see Blagg depict the same cowboy three times, moving from left to right through the cattle during a typical spring roundup. With these "Three Jacks", or spurs, Woodrow also makes reference to a game of cards, which was a beloved pastime of the cowboys. In referencing this work, Blagg says, "that particular time was the only way I could connect my artwork with what it felt like to be on the Waggoner. I felt fully connected to the spatial and animated work that one could never really predict what would happen. It was very exciting to be a part of and continues to this day". Woodrow Blagg (American/Texas, b. 1946).
