His work has been shown in over forty solo and group exhibitions, including ones at Gerald Peters Gallery, Artspace 111, and William Campbell Contemporary Art. His paintings are found in private and permanent museum collections around the state, including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, The Grace Museum, and the Old Jail Art Center. He is best known for his hyper-realistic approach to both rural and historical urban Texas landscapes.     DANIEL BLAGG (American, b. 1951) Texas Landscape Oil on canvas 42 x 64 inches (106.7 x 162.6 cm) Signed on stretcher: Dan Blagg Born in Oklahoma City and a resident of Fort Worth, Dennis Blagg is a self-taught painter whose work chiefly features landscapes of Texas' Big Bend region. He was the recipient of the Texas Fine Arts Association Grumbacher Award in 1986. Blagg has exhibited in more than 30 solo and group shows, and his work is in the collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and the Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi.

However, upon further contemplation of Blagg's work, the viewer also discovers an intense sense of mood, psychological depth, and emotionally loaded subjects which are often more similar to the themes of Edward Hopper and Giorgio de Chirico.

    DANIEL BLAGG (American, b. 1951) House & Barn, 1984 Oil on canvas 48 x 75 inches (121.9 x 190.5 cm) Inscribed verso: Daniel Blagg 1984 oil / cvs 48" x 75" / (House & Barn) Blagg's other painting House and Barn is a rural landscape in which most of the space is taken up with the skillfully painted limestone ledge. It is different from many of his urban and industrial themed works. However, one should take into consideration the fact that this "rural scene" was painted in Plano, Texas, during the mid-1980s, a time when the expansion of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex was swiftly encroaching on many small satellite communities like Plano. Thus, this classic rural image presented to the viewer represents a natural setting which will soon be swallowed by the urban landscape.

At first glance, one may come to the conclusion that Blagg is a talented photo-realist in the vein of Richard Estes, whose formal method focuses on the tension between formal abstraction and a faithful rendering of every detail of the subject. However, upon further contemplation of Blagg's work, the viewer also discovers an intense sense of mood, psychological depth, and emotionally loaded subjects which are often more similar to the themes of Edward Hopper and Giorgio de Chirico. For example, vintage signs, a common subject in Blagg's work, stand alone as surreal portraits of modern industrial culture and symbols of the historical urban landscape. These paintings convey the modern urban experience-progress at the expense of beloved landmarks, isolation, nostalgia, and decay. In Pegasus on a Dallas Building, Blagg captures the historic Texaco Pegasus sign, an iconic symbol from the Dallas skyline. The triangle-shaped composition is dramatically cropped, and the sign at the top of the high-rise is painted from a perspective originating at street level. The architecture of the office building creates dynamic geometric shapes which culminate in the Pegasus sign. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of the blue sky and the red sign create a dramatic contrast which also pulls the eye upward to the top to the composition. This work is not only visually stunning. It is also a compelling example of the artist's ability to evoke an intellectual and emotional response from both the chosen subject and the abstracted formal elements of the painting.
