    Feb. 27, 2025

Joan Blaeu, Antique World Map Dedicated Frans Banning Cocq

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

This exceptional 17th-century handcolored engraved world map was created by Joan Blaeu, one of the leading cartographers of the Dutch Golden Age, is a magnificent artifact of history and geography. The map is an extraordinary example of cartographic excellence and artistic embellishment, featuring a dedication to Frans Banning Cocq, the famed Amsterdam mayor immortalized in Rembrandt's The Night Watch. The map delineates the known world of the 17th century, with latitudinal zones, navigational routes, and continental boundaries rendered in exquisite detail. Hand-colored embellishments, including ships, sea monsters, and a stunning armorial cartouche, elevate this piece as both an educational tool and an artistic masterpiece. Joan Blaeu's maps were at the forefront of cartography during the 17th century, appearing in his monumental Atlas Major, considered one of the most luxurious atlases of its time. This map exemplifies Blaeu's dual focus on scientific accuracy and visual splendor. The dedication to Frans Banning Cocq highlights the importance of influential patrons in supporting cartographic endeavors during the Dutch Golden Age. Frans Banning Cocq, a prominent figure in Amsterdam's civic history, was a key supporter of cultural and scientific advancements. His name, emblazoned in the cartouche, underscores the map's historical context as a symbol of intellectual and artistic collaboration. Sight size: 20"L x 15,50"H. • Joan Blaeu, Antique Handcolor Engraved Map Bracciano Italy
    Feb. 27, 2025

Joan Blaeu, Antique Handcolor Engraved Map Bracciano Italy

    Est: $200 - $800

This exquisite colored engraving map of the Duchy of Bracciano (Ducatus Braccianus sive Sabatiae Regio) is a remarkable artifact from the 17th century, originally published in Joan Blaeu's renowned Atlas Major. Blaeu, a leading figure in the Dutch Golden Age of cartography, crafted this map with precision, artistry, and dedication to both geographic accuracy and aesthetic grandeur. The map prominently features Lago di Bracciano (Lake Bracciano), also known historically as Sabatini Lacus, surrounded by meticulously rendered towns, forests, and rivers. Richly hand-colored and adorned with an ornate cartouche and heraldic crest, this piece embodies the high level of craftsmanship for which Blaeu's atlas Major is celebrated. Joan Blaeu's Atlas Major, first published in 1662, was an ambitious undertaking, often referred to as the most beautiful atlas ever created. The maps in this collection showcased the height of 17th-century cartographic knowledge and were aimed at the elite of society. This map of Bracciano reflects the cultural and geographical importance of Lazio and the Papal States during this period. The Duchy of Bracciano, situated within the Papal States, was a center of political and social influence. Lake Bracciano served as a vital resource for Rome and has long been celebrated for its natural beauty. This map combines Blaeu's detailed geographic knowledge with the Baroque artistic style of the era. Sight size: 23"L x 17"H. Frame dimensions: 32.50"L x 26.50"H x 1.25"W. Apr. 27, 2024

NUEVO ATLAS DE LOS REYNOS DE ESCOCIA E YRLANDA.

    Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Large folio: [12 incl. engr. title]-232, 82-[1] pp.; 55 maps almost all pasted on, which is characteristic for the edition (added strip of paper with text on p. 18/Ireland, the maps are generally in good condition, the text lvs on the other hand are occ. heavily browned). - Rare second Spanish edition (1st Sp. ed. 1659) of Blaeu's Atlas of Scotland with the Spanish text completely reset and the new text sheets laid over already printed ones, making the maps in this atlas feel doubly thick. In fact, the fire that ruined Blaeu's printing house in 1672, destroyed all copperplates of the maps from Scotland and Ireland. The remaining sheets were available only in limited quantities and so stock from other editions was used to make new complete atlases. This edition has on the imprint the date 1654, when Blaeu obtained the privileges to publish, then started working continuously but slowly. It also includes the dedication to Gaspar de Bracamonte, dated 18 July 1658. The fact that most maps are pasted on implies that the atlas was produced after 1672. The maps of Scotland were engraved after Timothy Pont's manuscript survey maps and augmented with information by Robert Gordon. - Ref. Van der Krogt II [2:442Q].

Large folio: [10 incl. engr. title]-460-[1] pp.; 58 maps (text lvs and maps sl. browned, rather heavily dampstained and occ. moulded in upper part, marg. tear p. 97, hole in maps of Oxfordshire, Suffolk, and in text p. 385). - First edition of Blaeu's Atlas of England, in Latin. Most maps are engraved after the lavishly decorated and highly accurate copperplates by J. Hondius who, between 1605 and 1610, was employed by John Speed to engrave the plates for his "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" (London 1611-12), the earliest published atlas of the entire British Isles and a standard reference until the beginning of the 18th century. For the text part J. Blaeu used W. Camden's Britannia (1st 1586), the first chorographical survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. The atlas was added as the 4th vol. to the "Theatrum orbis terrarum". - Ref. Van der Krogt II [2:301Ha]. - Prov. Hermits of St. Augustine in Brussels (ms. entry). - Libr. stamp.

BLAEU, Joan Guilliemius (1596-1673). Theatrum Orbis Terrarum [Nuevo Atlas de los Reynos de Escocia e Yrlanda] (Scotland and Ireland): Volume V. Amsterdam: J. Blaeu, 1659. Folio, engraved title-page, 55 maps including 6 maps of Ireland, hand-colored and heightened in gilt with the highest level of gold-leaf color we have ever seen. Original vellum gilt, ties lacking, covers soiled and spine chipped with sections lacking, two maps with some small tears to central fold, several maps lightly browned or spotted, some scattered foxing to final leaves. Provenance: Colonel Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton, KT (1739 -1819), his bookplate on the front pastdown. Gift inscription on the title-page in ink manuscript: "To the Earl of Eglinton from his obliged humble Servant/ Pryce L. Gordon/ 1801." Spanish edition of the fifth part, focusing on Scotland and Ireland, of Blaeu’s Theatrum, in a fine contemporary binding and with nuanced hand-color heightened lavishly gilt. Joan Blaeu (1596–1673) was, along with his father Willem and brother Cornelis, the great Dutch cartographer of the Golden Age. He was made official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company after his father’s death. The joint family project was the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (first issued 1635), and after the death of the patriarch in 1638 the Theatrum was gradually expanded into the so-called Atlas Maior (Greater Atlas). The present item is the Spanish edition (there were editions in Latin, French, Dutch and German) of the England volume. Blaeu’s mastery of engraving and mise-en-page nevertheless give the work power and beauty. Pryce Lockhart Gordon (or Pryse, 1762-1845) was a close friend of Byron's who traveled with him on the Continent. Gordon and Montgomerie (also Montgomery), having acceded to the Earldom in 1796, traveled through Italy 1797-1801; thus the present atlas was likely bought there and given as a gift during their travels. The two would travel together again, going to Sicily in 1811.
