Artist

William Gardner Blackwood was born on 26 March 1892 at Holly Bank, Kilcreggan, Dunbarton, Scotland and married Ethel Matilda Stroud in 1918. Little is known of his formative years and how he got his training as an artist but we know he fought as a soldier in the First World War along with his older brother, James. He served with the Canadian Overseas Regimental Force in 1915. In 1918, he was a soldier at the 4th Canadian General Hospital, in Basingstoke. He emigrated to Canada, and arrived at Quebec 4th Sep 1927 with his wife and young son, Gordon, on the ship "Athenia", Cunard Lines. Then began what appears to be a wonderful period of work in watercolors and oils shortly after the first appearance of the Group of Seven's art in the 1920's before he vanishes from Canada's emerging art world, only to reappear as a SIMPSON'S artist which was prevalent from the 1930's to the 1960's, the department store enlisting the works of listed and well known Canadian painters and selling them through their department stores. His works have always been well received and do appreciate in value year by year. He is a listed Canadian artist and is represented with the Art Gallery of Ontario - Edward P. Taylor Research Library and Archives and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts - Library. His subject matter is invariably the countryside around the Laurentian Hills and Ontario's Muskoka region. He paints the seasons and the countryside, the lakes and rivers.
