      Apr. 04, 2019

ROBERT BLACKBURN (1913 - 2003) Heavy Forms (Pink).

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

ROBERT BLACKBURN (1913 - 2003) Heavy Forms (Pink). Color lithograph, 1962. 404x500 mm; 16x19 3/4 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Artist's proof, printed in different colors, aside from the 1962 edition of approximately 10-12. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin. A very good, richly-inked scarce proof of this very scarce and significant print. According to Creative Space: Fifty Years of Robert Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop, from 1958 to 1961, Blackburn worked on several variations of the lithograph Heavy Forms. The abstracted imagery derives from Blackburn's earlier tabletop still lifes. Here the image aligns the "tabletop" to the printed surface, tipping it up to mimic the inked edge of the lithographic stone and the print process itself. Blackburn treated the stone with tremendous fluidity, re-orienting the image and frequently signing his work on both top and bottom margins, allowing options for viewing.

According to Creative Space: Fifty Years of Robert Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop, "from 1958 to 1961, Blackburn worked on variations of the lithograph Heavy Forms. The imagery can be seen as deriving from Blackburn's earlier tabletop still lifes. However, here the image matches its 'tabletop' to the printed surface, tipping it up to mimic the inked edge of the lithographic stone and print process itself. Blackburn treated the stone with tremendous fluidity, re-orienting the image and frequently signing his work on both top and bottom margins, allowing options for viewing."

      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

ROBERT BLACKBURN (1920 - 2003) Mike's Place. Lithograph on cream wove paper, 1938. 337x413 mm; 13 1/4x16 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 3/5 in pencil, lower margin. This lithograph is a rare view of a Harlem Renaissance gathering and one of the earliest lithographs by the artist to come to auction. Robert Blackburn printed Mike's Place, alternately titled Clubroom, at the Harlem Community Art Center, where he studied lithography with artist Riva Helfond. Blackburn was still in high school at DeWitt Clinton in 1938 - his drawings and lithographs illustrated in The Magpie, his high school's literary magazine - graduating in 1939. We have found only one other record of this extremely scarce print, Clubroom. Once owned by Riva Helfond and then in the collection of Reba and Dave Williams before it was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Mustalish, p. 72; Fine, p. 248.
