Olive Black was born in Massachussetts but later studied art in New York, at both the Art Student League and the New York National Academy of Design. Her teachers, including Hugh Bolton Jones and William Meritt Chase, influenced her use of impressionism and Barbizon School style in her work. Black exhibited at many prominent institutions, including the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Club of Philidelphia.
