Since his student days, his leaning toward quasi-surreal imagery and the influence of social realism were already evident. His experiences in the advertising world also serve as great training for honing his skills in conceptualization and mastering creative processes which are apparent in the expressiveness of the images that pervade his works. Bitancor’s signature symbology blended with social realist themes reflect the concerns of the current times, yet dark as his timely works are, Bitancor still imbues hope, often through the presence of doves and the sense of flight of his figures from present plight. Jeho Bitancor - (b.1967) - Alay Sa Poon

        Est: ₱140,000 - ₱182,000

Jeho Bitancor (b.1967) Alay Sa Poon signed and dated 2019 (lower left) oil on canvas All roads lead to Quiapo Church during the Feast of the Black Nazarene. The famed religious icon was carved by an unknown Mexican from a dark wood in the 16th century in Mexico and then transported to the Philippines in 1606. It depicts Jesus en route to his crucifixion. Pope Innocent X granted recognition to the lay Confraternity of Santo Cristo Jesús Nazareno in 1650 for the promotion of the devotion to Jesus through the icon. It was housed in several churches near Manila in the early decades, arriving in Quiapo Church in 1787 where it has been enshrined ever since. The icon is renowned in the Philippines and is considered by many Filipino Catholics to be miraculous; its mere touch reputed to cure disease. It attracts homage by numerous devotees and major processions every year. In the mid-1980s and as a result of Roberto Chabet’s effective method in cultivating his student’s own language, Jeho Bitancor was already exploring his personal symbology that is characterized by quasi-surreal imagery — early explorations in art as a purveyor of social realist themes. In his breakthrough work, Bitancor imbued his statements, ironies and epigrams in the hope that knowledge and awareness may serve as an impetus for societal change. From 1992- 2002, Bitancor’s paintings were based directly on observed and/or experienced situations. These works were at that time done in monochromes and were rendered in heavy chiaroscuro and impasto-like application with a lot of intensity in visual contrasts. By 2004, he continued exhibiting paintings similar to what he has already explored in the 1980s. These works were characterized by the use of color and symbolism but were all inspired by his reflections on society, the workings of ideology and lament on individual struggles. He explores juxtaposing images and superimposing graphic elements on top of traditional figurations.

        Jeho Bitancor (b.1967)

        Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Jeho Bitancor (b.1967) Untitled “These works were characterized by the use of color and symbolism but were all inspired by my reflections on society, the workings of ideology and lament on individual struggles” said by the social realist Jeho Bitancor in an interview done in 2010, upon commenting on his socially conscious works which is represented in the recent composition. Here, Bitancor portrays the plight of the construction workers exhausted from their brutal labor taking a break in the construction of an office place under the glow of the sweltering heat. The laborers are depicted in an array of positions around the scaffoldings, with some lounging for an afternoon rest or doing a crossword on a tabloid. On the bottom, we see two workers playing Dama, a Philippine variation of the games of checkers using thrown bottle caps or tansans as pawns in their board game. This is seen as important analogy that Bitancor has utilized by centering on the idea of pawns represented by the workers, being by utilized by an unseen corporatist leviathan ever expanding his sphere of influence through his rapid and massive redevelopment of the urban metropolis. For the artist, the laborers are more than just a means to an end in the Machiavellian sense, but also have their own human dignity and constitutional rights that must be respected and empowered. signed and dated 2018 (lower right) oil on canvas 60”x 48” (152 cm x 122 cm) Property from a Distinguished Couple

JEHO BITANCOR (b. 1967) CAREER CHANGE, 2010, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM5,000 - RM8,000

This would have made a good poster advertisement for a job recruitment agency, covering a wide spectrum of occupations, with dual destinies. No wonder for the artist, Jeho Bitancor, who has advertising background, having worked for the reputable McCann Erikson before. In Career Change, one can either change jobs or have dual jobs. For instances, the cashier needs her work to supplement her fees to be a ballerina, the high-riding executive with tie looking at his handphone probably for power-lunch appointments could become a menial office sweeper, and so on and so forth. Whatever one does, it helps to drive the wheels of the economy although in human terms, it is left for the individuals making a career change to experience. Thing is, unless you are born with a stash of obscene wealth to your name, you need to move your butt and work – going through the rigmarole of education, specific courses, universities… to get through in life. Yet, all those in the job market are hostage to the tentacles of the late capitalist system.Based in the United States, Jeho Bitancor studied at the University of the Philippines over a long period from 1984-1992, followed by the Art Students League in New York in 1997. He is one of the ‘13 Artist Awardees’ of the Cultural Centre of the Philippines in 2006. He took part in the Vermont Studio Centre residency under the Freeman Foundation in 1997. He has done three solos with the Liongoren Gallery. He is the founding president of the Baler Art Group based in Aurora province, and is now involved in the Bliss Art Projects, an independent artist-run space dedicated to transcultural exchanges in New York. His works are collected by the Singapore Art Museum, the Ateneo Art Gallery, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Cojuangco Museum, and the University of the Philippines.
