"A Man Reading" pen and ink on paper, n.d. Attached inscription signed "Bisi f[ecit]." A wonderful pair of pen and ink drawing by Italian artists Giuseppe Appiani and Giuseppe Bisi. The drawing by Appiani portrays a sweet image of the Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus in her lap. Surrounded by shrubbery and foliage, this appears to be a Madonna of humility. Alternatively, Bisi's composition portrays a man striding left as he reads a book, his body draped in Classical clothing as he tangles one hand in the thick coils of his long beard, his narrowed brow conveying an attitude of deep concentration. (Genoa 1787–1869 Varese) A View of Locarno from the Naviglio Grande, c. 1830, oil on cardboard on canvas, 30 x 47.5 cm, unframed Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. A certificate by Prof. Fernando Mazzocca, 12 June 2023, is available upon request. Giuseppe Bisi was a versatile landscape painter in Restoration Milan, so highly regarded for both his vistas and landscapes that a chair was established for him as professor of landscape painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1838, a position he occupied until 1856. A similar view of Locarno by Bisi was published by Virgilio Gilardoni in 1972 in his catalogue "I monumenti d'arte e storia del Canton Ticino: Locarno e il suo circolo" (p.15). Another view of Locarno, also by Bisi but smaller in size, was exhibited in 2020 in Rancante-Mendrisio in the Pinacoteca Comunale Giovanni Züst in the exhibition "Uno sguardo sul collezionismo privato nella Lugano del Sette e Ottocento: le quadrerie Riva", (pp. 158-161). This painting depicts the canal port built in 1828 in the foreground. Boats are anchored along the banks and the figures of the passers-by are well defined. The buildings of the old town centre are in the background, with the new and elegant bourgeois buildings to the right. The mountain peaks, draped in a curtain of clouds, limit the view to the left.

coppia \“(…)La predilezione per la pittura prospettica portò Luigi Bisi a specializzarsi nelle vedute di architettura e interni di chiese ed edifici monumentali con un'ottica consapevole dell'arte fotografica, ottenendo un buon successo presso la borghesia meneghina: a differenza del collega e contemporaneo Giovanni Migliara, che trattava composizioni analoghe ma di fantasia, Bisi preferiva comporre vedute reali, anche se nel periodo giovanile si era dedicato per lo più a composizioni di esterni come i ‘Casolari in Brianza’ e la ‘Strada dello Stelvio’. Ben presto le sue preferenze si spostarono agli interni (la Certosa di Pavia, Sant'Eustorgio, la chiesa di Tolentino, Sant' Ambrogio, l'Abbazia di Altacomba, ecc.) e fu a partire dalla fine degli anni Trenta che iniziò a realizzare opere con interni del Duomo di Milano (se ne conoscono molte decine in prestigiose raccolte pubbliche e private), ottenendo unanimi giudizi positivi già dal pubblico contemporaneo, vedute in cui si coglie il perfezionamento progressivo della tecnica di Bisi, ma sempre con intense e autentiche visioni che si rinnovano continuamente attraverso i differenti giochi delle linee, delle luci e delle ombre. (…)\”¶

Vedute von Venedig Öl auf Leinwand. 60 x 78,5 cm. Links unten signiert „G. Bisi“. Blick über das ruhig fließende Wasser des Canal Grande auf die im Schatten liegende Punta della Dogana und auf die dahinter liegende sonnenbeschienene Basilika Santa Maria della Salute mit ihren großen weißen Kuppeln vor bedrohlich wirkendem, grau-schwarzem Himmel eines abziehenden Gewitters. Linksseitig klart der noch gelbliche Himmel auf und wird am oberen Rand bereits hellblau. Auf dem Wasser selbst einige Boote, darunter mittig ein großes Segelboot mit Uniformierten. Am Ufer zahlreiche Figuren und bereits angelegte Boote- und Schiffe. Harmonische, romantische Malerei in der typischen Manier des Künstlers. Anmerkung: Giuseppe Bisi malte hauptsächlich Landschaften im romantischen Stil. 1829 reiste er nach Rom und malte dort Landschaften in Latium. Er kehrte nach Mailand zurück und wurde 1838 zum Professor für Landschaftsmaler an der Accademia di Brera ernannt. (1330462) (18)
