    Hans Bischoffshausen "1. fossiles Bild" 1956 mixed media on canvas; framed 68 x 68 cm signed and dated on the lower right: Bischoffshausen 56/Nov. institutional collection; since 2012 private collection, Austria Lot 27 is a painting that documents a decisive development in Bischoffshausen’s work. Described by Bischoffshausen himself in a note on the back of the work as the "first fossil picture", it marks and dates the beginning of the "Fossil Reliefs" – a series of works that occupied Bischoffshausen for several years and in which ultimately the form of the later "Energy Fields" was already established. In the second half of the 1950s, Bischoffshausen’s work was heterogeneous. In the process of finding his own unique, authentic artistic language, the young painter explored a wide variety of techniques, materials and modes of expression in order to ultimately arrive at the reductive style of his monochrome relief works of the 1960s. A decisive milestone on this journey was the creation of the "Fossil Reliefs", the first of which we see here. The Fossil Reliefs mark the beginning of a sustained expansion of the pictorial surface in space. Superimposed layers of PVC, asphalt or cellular concrete are worked into rhythmic structures using a spatula. In this "first fossil picture", the relief displays very definite representational references: the ridge patterns suggest fossilised plant fragments and imprints of primeval leaves, and thus clearly reveal how Bischoffshausen arrived at his title. As the artist developed the "Fossil Reliefs" further, such representational references would soon disappear. The detachment of the individual structural elements (i.e., spatula strokes) from any iconographic or symbolic meaning, the rhythm of the structure and the play of light and shadow would noticeably come to the fore. The work illustrates a decisive point in Bischoffshausen’s creative work and combines elements from his artistic past, present and future at that time: here, Bischoffshausen brings from the preceding years the technique of structuring the pictorial surface by means of different fields of colour, as well as the vegetal, palm-frond-like forms that he used in his "Paul-Klee-Reflexion" at the beginning of the 1950s. This process of experimenting with different materials and of starting to expand the pictorial space by means of superimposed layers are characteristic of that period, i.e. the second half of the 1950s, and the first forays into precise rhythmic relief work, as well as a focus on individual structural elements and their distribution on the canvas, represent the groundbreaking aspects for his own oeuvre.
