WERNER BISCHOF (1916–1954) | Skull of a bison, Switzerland 1941 Image Size: 30,5 x 24 cm English: Vintage silver print on single-weight glossy Agfa-Brovira paper, in very good condition. Photographer's credit stamp and his handwritten address in Zurich, as well as titled in German "Schädel eines Bisons" in ink on the reverse. PROVENANCE Collection of Lou Parella, co-editor of "U.S. Camera" magazine. LITERATURE Marco Bischof, Simon Maurer et al. (eds.), Werner Bischof. Bilder, Zurich 2006, ill. 29; Werner Bischof, 24 Bilder, portfolio ed. by L.M. Kohler, Bern 1947, n. p. Before Werner Bischof turned to photojournalism after the Second World War, he devoted himself to studio work as a fashion and advertising photographer and, as a freelancer, primarily to still lifes. Until the 1940s, his work was characterised by calm, formally perfect images in which the design principles of his teacher at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts, Hans Finsler, continued to have an impact. From 1942, Bischof published his first pictures in the monthly magazine "Du", including this impressive shot of a bison skull on a sandy ground, which also appeared in the "U.S. Camera". The enigmatic shadow and the footprint recognisable in it reveal the influence of Surrealism; the print on offer is a rare collector's item. * Vollbesteuert

Silver print, the image measuring 9¾x11¾ inches (24.8x29.8 cm.), with Bischof's credit stamp and numeric notations in pencil on verso. 1951 Provenance: Acquired in 1960 by the editor of the Bantam edition, New York "Priests of the modern Meiji Temple, which was built to honor the emperor who opened Japan to Western influence. Wearing ancient robes and headdresses, they have been to open the temple gates to members of the Imperial Family, who are to be honored on the occasion of Meiji's anniversary celebrations." - Werner Bischof and Robert Guillain, Japan (Simon & Schuster, 1954) In the summer of 1951, Werner Bischof was assigned to photograph the war in Korea. The journey took him to Japan, where American soldiers were sent on leave. Japan captivated him and after completing his assignment in Korea, he devoted a year to pursue his own aesthetic research on capturing Japan's incommensurable beauty, but also fascinating ability in skillfully oscillating between traditional preservation and modernized ways of live. This iconic picture was taken in the winter of 1951 on a snowy day while Bischof was visiting the garden of the Meiji Shrine. Bischof died tragically in a road accident in the Andes on May 16, 1954, where he was engaged in making a film. His photographs of Japan were posthumously published in a book entitled Japan, 1954 written by Robert Guillain, a French journalist, and later in a paperbound edition by Magnum. One of Bishop's most famous photographs shows priests with large paper umbrellas striding through the snow-covered Meiji-Temple courtyard under giant pine trees; it is considered a symbol of the coexistence of tradition and modernity in Japan. The temple houses the mortal remains of Emperor Mutsuhito (1852–1912), under whose reign Japan rose to become a highly modern industrial and maritime power. *Item is fully Taxed Deutsch: Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet 1989 von Pictorial Services Paris auf halbmattem "double-weight" Papier 50,7 x 60,5 cm, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand.
