        Feb. 23, 2020

        Abadie. ca. 1925.

        Est: $3,500 - $4,000

ARTIST: MIHÁLY BIRÓ (1886-1948) SIZE: 37 3/8 x 97 3/4 in./95 x 248.3 cm DESCRIPTION: Biró was best known for his political and anti-war posters in Hungary, but during his Vienna period (1910-1928), he created many posters for commercial products. “In contrast to his political posters which were mostly printed in two colors and were designed according to the seriousness of their contents, the posters for art and commerce were mostly colorful and often times carried by a sense of humor and a cleverly staged lightness” (Biró, p. 25). Here, he ingeniously turns the brand name into the base for a boudoir light, suggesting that Abadie cigarette rolling papers isn’t the only thing smoldering in the room. A sensually rare, two-sheet design. (Art Deco; Tobacco)

Mihály Biró was one of the originators of protest art. Prior to World War I he originated one of the great political symbols, the Red Giant-With-Hammer. After the Communist Revolution in Russia, however, his designs for the Social Democrats drained the red out of the Giant, and his art became less symbolic, more realistic, and more raw and Expressionist. The figure of the People, bound and gagged and whipped by military men and industrialists, speaks for itself. (Propaganda)

Biró and others saw the carnage that was about to come to Europe. "Hadüzenet!" the poster cries, "This is a message: a declaration of war upon War. Fight for peace! Biro was born in Budapest and studied art in Berlin, Paris and London before returning to Hungary to begin his professional career. He was a prominent young designer and took an active role in the Socialist revolutionary movement in 1918, designing several powerful and unforgettable images. When the conservatives came to power Biro fled to Vienna, where he continued to design posters for the Social Democratic Party, but also involved himself more in commercial projects. In 1928 he moved to Berlin, where he designed movie posters for the UFA. Biro essentially used the same system for every poster he designed: an oversized central figure and a lot of red, which is exactly how he advertises this film about the white slave trade.
