The auction record for one of his painting’s is currently set at around €30,000 in the international art market This watercolor was very likely created during Birkenruth’s activity with the magazine ‘Black and White: A Weekly Illustrated Record and Review’, which was founded in 1891 by Charles Norris Williamson and published, among others, short stories and fiction by Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, H.G. Wells or May Sinclair. Condition: The watercolor is in good condition. The image carrier is mounted to a mat and is slightly soiled in the edges with remains of former mounting and slight water stains in the upper edge. Some discoloration in the edges of the mat window. The back of the sheet shows some foxing. In the lower part of the Ladies dress a fine, horizontally extending scratch is visible. Otherwise overall of good impression. The image measures 32 x 38 cm, the sheet dimensions are 36.6 x 49.8 cm, the frame dimensions 48.5 x 53.5 cm. Adolph Birkenruth (1861-1940) Birkenruth was born in 1861 in Grahamstown, South Africa. His father was a Prussian diamond broker, the mother came from Frankfurt, which is where the family moved back in the 1860s. There Birkenruth attended the University and further studied in Paris. In the 1880s he moved to London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In addition, he used to work as an illustrator for several magazines, including the ‘Black & White’ weekly or the London News. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
