Four 19th C. Charles Bird King Colored Lithographs

            Est: $600 - $900

John T. Bowen (English, 1801-1856) after Charles Bird King (American, 1785-1862). Four hand-colored lithographs from "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," Philadelphia: J.T. Bowen, 1850 and D. Rice and A.N. Hart, 1848. Three have "Lith.d, Col.d, & Published by J.T. Bowen, Philad.a" printed below image. "Paddy-Carr" has "Published by D. Rice and A.N. Hart, Philad.a / Lith. Printed & Col.d by J. T. Bowen" printed blow image. A fine ensemble of four hand-colored lithographs by J.T. Bowen after portraits by American artist Charles Bird King, all originally published in "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" by Thomas McKenney (American, 1785-1859) and James Hall (American, 1793-1868). "Paddy-Carr, Creek Interpreter" was published by C. Rice and A.N. Hart in 1848, while "Oche-Finceco," "Apauly-Tustennuggee," and "Pee-Che-Kir, A Chippewa Chief" were published by J.T. Bowen in 1850. Size of page (all the same): 6.75" W x 10.25" H (17.1 cm x 26 cm); with matte: 11.5" W x 15" H (29.2 cm x 38.1 cm) From 1824 to 1830, Thomas McKenney served as US Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Washington, DC, and during his tenure developed a government collection of portraits of prominent Native Americans who visited the city as delegates of their tribes. McKenney commissioned a well-known Washington portraitist, Charles Bird King, to paint the leaders of about twenty Native American tribes. Sadly, those original paintings were destroyed by a fire. Given this, lithographs rendered after those paintings, like these, are the only surviving records of those compositions. Provenance: private Appleton, Wisconsin, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. CHARLES BIRD KING AMERICAN, NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, D.C., 1785-1862 DAINGERFIELD CHILDREN OF ALEXANDRIA: MARY HELEN (1842-1875); WILLIAM BATHURST (1845-1917); EDWARD LONSDALE (1847-1925), 1853 Oil on canvas Catalogue note: Following the lead of his fellow artists working in early America, [Charles Bird] King specialized in portraiture. He studied under Edward Savage in New York, then with Benjamin West in London. He returned to America in 1812 and worked in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. In 1818 he settled permanently in the nation's capital. There he painted portraits of many prominent figures, including John Quincy Adams, John Calhoun, Henry Clay, James Monroe, and Daniel Webster. Charles Bird King also painted a portrait of Alexandria's Ann Caroline Dennis (nee Fowle) (1823-1844), who, along with the Daingerfield children, were descendants of prominent Alexandrian William Fowle (1783-1860) of The Patton-Fowle House, 711 Prince Street, Alexandria. The portrait of Ann Caroline Dennis was sold by the Potomack Company in 2018. The year before, Potomack also sold a notable 1860 painting of Alexandria, "Bridge Over Hunting Creek," commissioned by William Fowle or his married daughter Harriet Fowle Taylor. Mary Helen Daingerfield lived for a time in Alexandria's Lyceum, which her father, John Bathurst Daingerfield (1815-1886), bought and remodeled for her as a wedding gift in 1868. All three of the subjects in the "Daingerfield Children" are buried in Alexandria: Mary Helen and William Bathurst in Christ Church Episcopal Cemetery and Edward Lonsdale in Presbyterian Cemetery. Apr. 12, 2024

Charles Bird King Lithograph "Little-Crow" (1838)

            Est: $400 - $600

After Charles Bird King (American, 1785-1862) Lithograph, "Little-Crow, A Sioux Chief" Hand-colored lithograph from McKenney, Thomas L. & Hall, James. "History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Published in Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1838. "Drawn, Printed & Coloured at the I. T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment, No. 94, Walnut St." A wonderful, bust-length lithograph portrait of the Sioux Chief Little-Crow (Dakota, 1770-1827), facing forward with sloped shoulders wrapped in a heavy blanket and a bandana tied around his neck. His stern visage displays a wrinkled brow above sensitive eyes, a curved nose, and closed lips flanked by heavy nasolabial folds, all surmounted by a wavy, chin-length coiffure brushed back. A fabulous example of Charles Bird King's artwork, who was best known for his portrayals of important Native American leaders. Size of page: 14.1" W x 21" H (35.8 cm x 53.3 cm); of cardboard backing: 17.6" W x 24" H (44.7 cm x 61 cm) Also known to his tribe as The Sacred Pigeon-hawk Which Comes Walking, Little Crow was a noble Sioux chief of the Kaposia band, which resided on the east bank of the Mississippi. He fought for the British in the War of 1812 and traveled to Washington in 1824 as the leader of a Sioux delegation. When leaders of various Native American tribes visited President Monroe, McKenney, the Superintendent of Indian Affairs and a champion of Native American interests, commissioned artists including Charles Bird King to paint portraits of the delegates in their choice of dress. Unfortunately, most of King's original paintings later burned in a fire at the Smithsonian. Given this, the lithographs published in McKenney and Hall's "Indian Tribes of North America" are the only surviving records of the likenesses of many important 19th century Native American leaders. Other printings of this lithograph have been collected by the Smithsonian American Art Museum (object number 1985.66.153,210), the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (accession number 2004.19.37), National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. (object number NPG.99.167.12), and the Royal Academy of the Arts (object Number 18/1547). Est: $3,000 - $5,000

CHARLES BIRD KING (AMERICAN, 1785-1862), ATTRIBUTED, TRIPLE PORTRAIT OF THE FORSYTH SISTERS (VIRGINIA / GEORGIA), oil on canvas, an outstanding composition featuring three beautiful young ladies in pastel colored gowns and ribbons in a garden setting, no signature located. Housed in likely original figured tiger maple frame. Circa 1830. 35 3/4" x 27 3/4" sight, 43" x 35" OA.  Published: Rebecca Christian, "A bit of New England in Old Virginia", Country Home, February 1986, p. 48. Catalogue Note: According to family tradition, the present portrait depicts the daughters of John Forsyth (1780-1841), a native Virginian, who moved to Georgia and served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate on behalf of his adopted state. Over the course of his distinguished career, he also served as Governor of Georgia and United States Secretary of State under the Jackson Administration.  Charles Bird King (1785-1862) studied under some of the most prestigious artists of his time, such as Benjamin West and Edward Savage. Best known for his 1821 series of portraits of American Indians who had traveled to the nation's capitol in order to negotiate treaties with the Federal government, King had a studio in Washington, DC and primarily made a career painting portraits for wealthy clients in the growing city. It is likely that he executed this rare triple portrait of the Forsyth sisters when their father was attending to his legislative duties and the family was staying in the city. Est: $200 - $800

Hand colored lithograph on paper of ME-TE-A, A POTTAWATOMIE CHIEF. From the history of the Indian Tribes of North America. Sight: 17 inches tall by 12 inches wide. Matted only and under protective plastic. The initials RT or inscribed on the bottom right of lithograph. Small tear on left side. Charles Bird King painted the visiting chiefs as they came to Washington to negotiate treaties filling the war department’s gallery. Thomas McKenney dreamed of producing a portfolio of these images and written account. Fortunately, he made copies of the paintings with the help of the prominent artist, Henry Inman because the original paintings by Charles Bird King were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian. This historic folio was then published in Philadelphia by Frederick W. Greenough in 1836 from Thomas L. McKenney & James Halla‘s History of the Indian Tribes of North America. On the back are pages from a book with more information. Artist: After Charles Bird King Country of Origin: America

MCKENNEY & HALL, E.C. BIDDLE, 1848, WA-BAUN-SEE, colored lithograph. Charles Bird King (1785-1862). Wabaunsee, a Pottawatomie Chief. Hand-colored lithograph, Plate 68. McKenney, Thomas L. & Hall, James. History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1838-1844. Wa-baun-see, (Potawatomi ) was a chief who supported the British in the War of 1812. In 1814 he signed the Treaty of Greenville by which Potawatomi allegiance was transferred to the United States. In a series of treaties signed by Wabaunsee, Potawatomi lands around Lake Michigan were sold. In 1835 Wabaunsee visited Washington, D.C., to sign the treaty which sold the last of the tribal lands and to accept land west of the Mississippi River. During this visit, his portrait was painted by King. The Potawatomi Nation moved to Kansas in the 1840s and settled in what is now Wabaunsee County, just east of Topeka. Wabaunsee's portrait illustrates the Native American attraction to military costume. Coats, hats, and swords were often presented as gifts to prominent chiefs. Additionally, Wabaunsee wears a Presidential Peace Medal and large trade silver earrings.

Charles Bird King (American, 1785-1862). "Tuko-See-Mathla A Seminole Chief." Hand-colored lithograph from a folio edition of McKenney and Hall's Indian Tribes of North America. Published in Philadelphia: Daniel Rice & James G. Clark, 1843. "Drawn, Printed & Coloured at the Lithographic & Print Colouring Establishment, 94, Walnut St." A wonderful full-length portrait of Tuko-See-Mathla, a male Seminole chief who is presented standing and holding a rifle, wearing a striped, fringed wrap skirt and a striped shirt, with red sashes around his neck and waist, a red headdress with grey-black feathers and a scalloped, silver headband, silver cuff arm bands, fancy shin-high moccasins with buttons, and a grand medal around his neck. A striking original lithograph set in a beautiful custom red matte and a wooden frame with wonderful burled walnut and marquetry details. Size of visible lithograph (full sheet extends behind matte): 17.875" L x 9.875" W (45.4 cm x 25.1 cm) Size of frame: 27.5" L x 19.5" W (69.8 cm x 49.5 cm) Also known as John Hicks, Tuko-See-Mathla was a prominent Native American leader who opposed United States slave raids into Florida, separate schools for indigenous peoples, and the movement to relocate the Seminoles from their lands.
