JOSEP BIOSCA I BIOSCA (Albatargo, 1896 - 1994). "Maternity", ca. 1940. Terracotta. Signed. Measurements: 35 x 32 x 15 cm. Josep Biosca i Biosca was a Catalan sculptor. He learned drawing in Lleida from Lluís Izquierdo, and became friends with Paco Mercè and Miquel Viladrich, among others. In 1918 he moved to Paris where he worked in the workshop of the sculptor Gustau Violet from Rosell until he moved to Ceret. Biosca accompanied him to the capital of Vallespir, where he came into contact with artists such as Juan Gris and Manolo Hugué. Some time later he returned to Paris and worked in the workshop of Aristides Maillol before settling on his own in the French capital, where he lived until the German occupation. At that time, critics highlighted the balance of masses and forms as fundamental elements of his sculptures in marble, bronze and terra cotta.
