          • GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM MEZZOTINT, THE JOLLY FLAT BOAT MEN
            Nov. 23, 2024

GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM MEZZOTINT, THE JOLLY FLAT BOAT MEN

            Est: $4,000 - $8,000

[BINGHAM, George Caleb] (1811-1879). The Jolly Flat Boat Men (engraved by Thomas Doney). Hand-colored mezzotint on wove paper. New York: Printed by Powell & Co., 1847. 22 3/4" x 26 3/4" sheet, 21" x 24" image. Captioned "From the Original Painting Distributed by the American Art Union 1847 | Published exclusively for the Members of that Year." Known as "the Missouri Artist" in his lifetime, Bingham was one of the most important painters of genre subjects in the mid-19th century. His early years were spent in Missouri, and he knew at first hand the life of the frontier, especially the comings and goings of the boatmen who ferried cargo on the great rivers of the Midwest. His scenes of life and work on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers established his reputation and are today recognized as his finest creations. Intended for audiences in eastern cities such as New York and Philadelphia, his paintings portrayed boatmen as the rough-hewn characters who were instrumental in pushing the American frontier ever farther westward. In 1847, the American Art-Union, which had purchased The Jolly Flatboatmen (1846) directly from the artist, produced a large mezzotint of it that was distributed to its members (approximately 10,000) throughout the country, immediately making it one of the best known and treasured icons of American art. It depicts a group of boatmen who, after a day of hard work on the river, are now relaxing and dancing to a lively tune played on a fiddle and an impromptu percussive instrument in the form of a pan. Bingham's attention to detail is everywhere evident: a raccoon pelt hanging from a nail; a coil of rope; a shirt hanging to dry; and a turkey, which pokes its head out between the slats of the crate below the dancing man. The composition is at once dynamic-with the exuberance of the dancing man and the gusto of the musicians-as well as visually concise in the way Bingham arranged the figures to form a well-balanced triangle. BINDING/CONDITION: Matted. Expertly closed four-inch tear at center of bottom margin, just touching three letters in caption and extending to the base of the flat boat, minor tear at center of left margin. PROVENANCE: Dr. Lester E. Bauer of Detroit, Michigan, (his sale, Parke-Bernet, 27 October 1971, lot 6; Evelyn and Eric P. Newman, of Clayton, Missouri (letters from the First Street Forum, St. Louis, Missouri dated 23 September 1981 and the Mid-America Arts Alliance dated 10 October 1983 regarding the loan of the print for exhibition; and their sale, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, 12 November 2018, lot 24). BINGHAM, THE COUNTY ELECTION

            Est: $6,000 - $9,000

BINGHAM, George Caleb (1811-1879). The County Election... Lithograph with original hand color. Philadelphia: G. C. Bingham, 1854. 24" x 31" sheet, 34" x 41" framed. "The County Election" was part of a six-painting Election Series; the other paintings were "Stump Orator" (1847), "Country Politician" (1849), "Canvassing for a Vote" (1852), "Stump Speaking" (1853), and "The Verdict of the People" (1854-55). Engraved by Sartain after the 1852 painting by Bingham. One of the leading American genre painters of the mid-nineteenth century, George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879) created some of the most memorable views of American small town life. Bingham was fascinated by the democratic process and by the ways in which it permeated everyday existence in communities far removed from the big cities. "Forgetting perhaps that Bingham had a strong political bias of a militant Whig campaigner for state office, it would seem that recent students of his epic paintings on the American voting process have overlooked the subtle but incisive element of social criticism lodged in his famous work, 'The County Election.' Bingham, it seems, had serious misgivings about the introduction of universal manhood suffrage, with its equalitarian impact on American life, and he particularly resented it when in 1846 he felt he had been unfairly deprived of office by the gerrymandering activity of a Missouri political rival. On its surface, 'The County Election' appears to celebrate the new political ferment that Americans from Bangor, Maine, to the Western frontier were experiencing at mid-century. However, read more carefully as a document of social history, this canvas suggests that Bingham, like his contemporary, James Fenimore Cooper, saw the stability and integrity of the American milieu staggering under the impact of a too rapidly expanding body politic and the rigors of a laissez-faire economic system" (Westervelt, p. 46). "Intemperance was also associated with corrupt politics. George Caleb Bingham's 'County Election' of 1852 depicts the customary practice of candidates' serving free liquor to woo voters before an election In Bingham's painting, voters are enjoying their whiskey, with the result that some are too drunk even to stand, all before a banner hanging overhead that intones, 'The Will of the People, the Supreme Law.' Such scenes, describing a purchased and likely inebriated electorate, delivered a slap to the actual practice of direct democracy" (Barter, ed., p. 111). Robert F. Westervelt, "The Whig Painter of Missouri," The American Art Journal, vol. 2, no. 1, Spring 1970. Judith A. Barter, ed., "Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine.".

George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879) IN A QUANDARY. MISSISSIPPI RAFTMEN PLAYING CARDS 1852 The scarce middle 19th century lithographic image after the painting by Missouri artist George Caleb Bingham, considered by most to be America's premier genre painter, The composition depicts card players sharing a bench on the deck of a raft strewn with wood shavings. One of the players has laid down an ace and the other is considering his options. Also on deck are bundles of split wood shakes and an ovoid stoneware jug, most likely not for water. The margins have been trimmed. Portions of the bottom margin are pasted verso and read 'Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1852 by W. Schaus in the clerk's Office of the district Court of the United States for the Southern district of New-York.' another piece of the lower margin reads 'To Major James L. Rollins of Missouri, this print is Respectfully Dedicated by his most Obedient Servants, Goupil & Co. a third piece includes a section of the title and blind embossed seal of GOUPIL & Co. The original print is trimmed to 14.75 x 18.75. The print is mounted to acid free backing that measures 16.25 x 20 inches. The frame measures 25.25 x 28.75 inches. Knoedler & Co. after the painting from Bingham's Election Series. The composition was drafted at the doorway of the tavern in Arrowrock, Missouri. The tavern remains there today. The painting's symbolism is timeless as well. For instance, the metaphor of storm clouds in the distance and the simmering dispute over slavery, the horse's rear end near the politician and the indifference of the sleeping dog near the citizen. George Caleb Bingham (Missouri, 1811-1879) Martial Law, 1872 Mezzotint & engraving on paper 21 1/2" x 31" (image) One of George Caleb Bingham's most renowned works, Martial Law is a Civil War era illustration of General Order 11, when the Union Army ordered the 1863 evacuation of rural areas of western Missouri. While the intention of this edict was to clear rural areas of Confederate sympathizers for the safety of Union troops, the effect of evicting so many from their homes was a pro-Confederate sentiment in the area. Bingham vehemently opposed the order, and warned General Thomas Ewing (here pictured observing Jayhawkers forcing residents from their homes): "If you execute this order, I shall make you infamous with pen and brush." Engraved by John Sartain (Pennsylvania, 1808-1897) after the 1868 Bingham oil that is part of the State Historical Society of Missouri's permanent collection. Proof, published by the George C. Bingham Company. Presented behind glass in a frame that measures 40" x 48".

            Est: $20,000 - $30,000

George Caleb Bingham (American, 1811-1879) Portrait of Colonel Levi Pritchard, circa 1862 Oil on canvas 79 x 32 inches (200.7 x 81.3 cm) PROVENANCE: The artist; Levi Pritchard, acquired from the above; By descent in the Pritchard family; Private collection, New Jersey, 1996; Private collection, Wyckoff, New Jersey, by descent from the above. Colonel Levi Pritchard, the subject of George Caleb Bingham's monumental portrait, may be relatively unknown. However, as history proves, he was a national war hero who exemplified America's entrepreneurial spirit, helping others through public service over the course of his lifetime. According to art historian and Bingham scholar Fred Kline: "Lieutenant Colonel Levi Pritchard (1831-1901) exemplifies the heroic citizen solider of Missouri's Civil War period. He was a patriot who defended his state and the Union against the Confederate forces during most of the war years. Pritchard's exemplary record of Civil War service ranged across the state from St. Joseph to Jefferson City to St. Louis, beginning in 1861 when he joined the Union Army up to 1865 when he was wounded and released from active duty. He entered as a thirty-year old private, then quickly was promoted to Captain, and finally rose to Lt. Colonel, serving almost the entire time guarding Missouri with a number of State Militias. "This portrait was painted by Bingham circa 1862 when Pritchard was Captain of Company D, 4th Regiment Missouri State Militia Calvary, based at Regimental Headquarters, Jefferson City. Bingham, an active Whig politician and a nationally famous artist by then, had been appointed State Treasurer (1862-65) and moved to Jefferson City in 1862. "In 1864, while serving with the 12th Regiment Missouri Calvary, Major Pritchard was wounded in a battle related to the defense of Nashville, in support of General Thomas's decisive victory over the Confederate forces of General Hood. Pritchard left the service in February 1865 because of his wounds. Two months later, at the end of the Civil War in April, he was made a Lt. Colonel of the 54th Regiment of a newly organized Missouri Militia. This new militia, comprised of 84 regiments, survived long after the Civil War and became the primary force that addressed the lawlessness that engulfed post-war Missouri. "As a young man of twenty in 1852, Pritchard left Ohio and the family farm and crossed the plains to California seeking his fortune. By 1855, Pritchard returned to Ohio. In 1856, he moved to DeKalb County, Missouri, where he ran a general store and became DeKalb County Postmaster until the Civil War intruded. "After the Civil War, Pritchard returned to DeKalb County [to marry and raise his children] ...In 1879, he and his family, now with five children, moved to Graham County, Kansas, and to a life of farming, where they were known for their cattle, roses, and apples. In 1879, Pritchard founded the newspaper in Graham County, The Western Star in Millbrook, which continued publishing until 1928. "In 1880, Prichard was elected Graham County Surveyor. In 1892, as a member of the ‘People's Party,' he was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives, and in 1895 he was elected State Senator...and served until his death in 1901. "[Pritchard's] obituary from many sources honored Levi Pritchard as an extraordinary man: ‘...A most honored citizen...No man in Kansas stood higher in the estimation of the people...Western Kansas loses one of its best and most faithful citizens...If every man who enters politics could retire with the same high regard and respect from his associates, politics would be cleaner and the affairs of state would be more sacredly guarded...'" This work will be included in The George Caleb Bingham Catalogue Raisonné: Online Supplement of Paintings and Drawings, to be published online in 2

            Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Presented is an engraving of George Caleb Bingham’s Stump Speaking. George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879) was a famed American artist, as well as a soldier and politician, and was commonly referred to as the “Missouri Artist.” Bingham was elected as a delegate to the Missouri legislature preceding the American Civil War. Bingham, dedicated to the Union cause, fought as a dedicated soldier and eventually served as Missouri’s Treasurer after the war. While his political career is reputable, his paintings of frontier life were exceedingly popular including his Stump Speaking. Stump Speaking details a scene in Missouri where a politician, positioned on the stand above a crowd, persuades citizens to vote in his favor. Bingham made preliminary sketches of the scene before putting it to oil paint. Of the many characters represented in the scene, the "Stump Speaker" appears to be the most influential; swaying the watching crowd in his favor by bending to the people's desires. A composition of much symbolism, the oil on canvas painting was produced in 1853-54. Afterwards, many accurate engravings were produced on a smaller and more accessible scale.
