JAN BILLYCAN (DJAN NANUNDIE) 1930-2016 THREE JILA, 2005 acrylic on canvas 101.5 x 54 cm artwork cataloguing details verso PROVENANCE Yulparitja Arts, WA Cat No. 3205 Short St Gallery, WA Cat No. 781457 Bim Bam Gallery, Qld Private Collection, Qld Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Short St Gallery ©Jan Billycan (Djan Nanundie) / Copyright Agency, 2024 Jan (Djan Nanundie) Billycan’s painting captures the landscape of her birthplace, Kirriwirri, and other sacred sites in Ilyarra country. This region, characterized by expansive mud flats, shimmering salt lakes, and underground freshwater springs, was once the home of the Yulparija people in the Great Sandy Desert. However, drought and mining led to environmental devastation, forcing the community to seek refuge on the coast at Bidyadanga, south of Broome. In the aftermath of this displacement, a new art movement emerged, and Jan, a respected Marpan (medicine woman), became a central figure. This painting shows Jill (living waterholes) from Jan's country in the Great Sandy Desert. They are called Liki, Yugaree and Kirriwirri. In 2011, Jan Billycan’s remarkable talent was recognised when she won the West Australian Indigenous Art Award at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

Jan Billycan - Kirriwirri (Diptych), 2007

        Est: $12,000 - $16,000

During the last years of her life, Jan Billycan (aka Djan Nanundie) depicted the country of her birthplace, Kirriwirri and other sites in Ilyarra country. This is a land of spreading mud flats, gleaming salt lakes and a life-giving network of freshwater springs with their source deep underground. It was the home of the Yulparija people, deep in the Great Sandy Desert, before drought and mining caused the environmental catastrophe that drove them to the coastal refuge of Bidyadanga south of Broome. Following a time of grief and exile a new art movement flourished and Jan, a respected Marpan, or medicine woman, became a leading light. This painting is an expression of her unique and startling talent that depicts the birth place of her father's clan. There is a big warla (mud flat) at this place in the Great Sandy Desert west of Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route. Jan Billycan - Kirriwirri, 2007

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Jan Billycan was an important healer and medicine woman and highly respected elder amongst western desert people and in the communities of Broome and Bidyadanga, where she spent much of her late years. The landscape and body-scape are continually merged in Billycan's paintings. Her artworks raise issues of identity and the metaphysical nature of things, while playing on the idea that the land and self as one. Billycan's paintings have the appearance of a naïve rawness that belies their emotional sophistication and her complex understanding of the physical world. She mixed colours directly on the canvas, working lines repeatedly until they achieved a density and unique hue that reflected the individuality of each single sand dune in the desert, or every single bone in the body. "This place is the birth of my father's clan. Our clan is also named Kirriwirri, and call each individual member of this clan Kirriwirri. There is a big wala (mud flat) at this place. Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route. It is the birthplace of Jan and her family. This work shows tali (sand dunes) and jila (living water)." Jan Billycan

Our clan is also Kirriwirri and call each individual members of the clan Kirriwirri. There is a big warla (mud flat) at this place. This is what this painting is about.” Kirriwirri is in the Great Sandy Desert close to the Canning Stock Route in Western Australia. It is the birthplace of Jan and her family. This work shows tali (sand dunes) and ila (living water).’ The paintings of Jan Billycan (DjanNamundie) exhibit the Aboriginal perception that draws a metaphysical analogy between the human body and the landscape. The land is not separate from the people who inhabit it; rather, it is a fundamental element of an individual’s identity on ancestral, physical and social levels. Kirriwirri, 2006– 2007, is an outstanding pictorial expression of the concept where ribcage-like sections correspond to rows of tali or sand hills in Billycan’s ancestral lands, bulbous blue forms represent jila or ‘living water’ (freshwater) and the so-called ‘intestines’ map the journeys of the creator beings through the landscape. The artist’s statement that accompanies the painting describes Kirriwirri as not only the birthplace of her father’s clan, but the name of that clan and a name for each individual member of the clan. The painting possesses a visceral quality that is evident throughout the artist’s mature work; forms jostle against one another and push up against the picture frame. Kirriwirri, 2006– 2007 is one a small number of multi-panelled works made by the artist – the largest of which is All That Jila, 2006, housed in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia and featured in Culture Warriors, the first National Indigenous Triennial at the Gallery in 2007.1 Jan Billycan has been represented in other major exhibitions including YiwarraKuju: The Canning Stock Route at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra (2010), and in 2011 she won the Western Australian Artist of the year award at Art Gallery of Western Australia. Kiriwirri jila lies within the Percival Lakes or Warla country, a chain of salt lakes that runs for hundreds of kilometres across the desert intersecting the Canning stock route at Well 39. It is home to many language groups including including Yulparija, Wangkajunga, Manyjilyjarra, Nyangumarta, Mangala and Juwaliny speakers. Jan grew up around the Percival Lakes. She has strong ties to Kiriwirri, the place where she was born and the Country of her father's clan. In the 1960s she was picked up by extended family and taken to Bidyadanga, where she lives today. Jan is a respected maparn (medicine woman) and began painting in 2003. She returned to her Country for the first time in 2006.
