        FRANTIŠEK BÍLEK 1872 - 1941 - ASTONISHMENT

        Est: -

The exceptional sculpture of the famous Czech symbolist artist František Bílek coexists with the multilayered and evolving idea of his spiritual work. It is a smaller analogous variant to the larger-than-life sculpture in stained beech from 1907, which is in the collection of the National Gallery in Prague. Most of his reflections on the relationship between decadence and religion are based on the work of Charles Baudelaire. His approach entailed a journey of dialogue and questioning; his challenge was the Christian God in the time of loss of certainty that the turn of the century represented. The motif of wonder in the present sculpture can be seen as a parallel interpretation of wonder as the first of the human passions. This emotion, in the field of the author's lived time of ongoing secularization and technological change, had a dual character - amazement both religious and purely secular, which is reflected here in the return to the same theme after the (indiscernible) experiences of the First World War. Signed: signed and dated on the plinth: 1921 F. B.

        FRANTIŠEK BÍLEK 1872 - 1941 - A PROPHET

        Est: -

The exceptional sculpture of the famous Czech symbolist artist František Bílek coexists with the multilayered and evolving idea of his spiritual work. It is a sketch of one of the Prophets, which was part of the project The Journey Called Zachariah, published in 1909. In the sculpture one can see a more optimistic vision of human destiny than we know from the artist's work. In the sculpture, we observe the rejection of the body as a "prison of the soul" in order to emphasize its connection with the cosmos, a release from oppressive matter that the gesticulation of a figure physiognomically resembling Christ directly invites, and that accompanies every spiritual quest. Around the perimeter at the bottom of the sculpture, made of stained patinated maple wood, is the text: "He - to whom heaven and earth listen." Much of the thinking about the relationship between decadence and religion is based on the work of Charles Baudelaire. His approach entailed a journey of dialogue and questioning; his challenge was the Christian God in the era of loss of certainty that the turn of the century represented. Signed: signed on the plinth: F. B.

        FRANTIŠEK BÍLEK 1872 - 1941 - A VASE WITH A SCULPTURE

        Est: -

At the first glance at the vase with the unmistakable handwriting of František Bílek, it is obvious that it is a timeless mystical work. František Bílek carved and shaped his works as if he had torn them out of his own interior. Although he is primarily associated with Christian themes, his work is more an image of humanity and inner experiences than of Christian realities themselves. The distressed female sculpture, subject to painful loss, touches the body of the vase and points towards a number of motifs that refer to the religious traditions of ancient Egypt and its Book of the Dead. The engraved motif places the human figure in front of ancient deities and a winged scarab - a motif of cyclicity and rebirth. Ancient Egypt, as the cradle of biblical stories, fascinated Bílek and he probably modeled the facade of his villa on the colonnaded court of Amenhotep III in Luxor. The archaizing style imitates perhaps the pre-Christian Etruscan "bucchero" pottery, which often features mythical themes and not infrequently features zoomorphic or anthropomorphic sculptures. An analogous vase is in the collections of the Prague City Gallery under inventory number P-1480.

František Bílek was a representative of the era of symbolism and Art Nouveau. As a sculptor, carver, potter, graphic artist, draftsman and illustrator, he imprinted a strong social feeling in his work with an appeal to intense human experiences, psychospiritual development and the perception of human destiny. In collaboration with the Chýnov potters, František Bílek started to experiment with ceramics. The entire Chýnov decade (1892-1902) means in his work the development of artistic ideas and realizations in this direction. The coarser texture of the vase with abstract stuck on applications evoke figures and fully corresponds to Bílek's concept, where he fully acknowledges the material's natural tendencies and structures. In 1868 he had a house built in Chýnov, which was also supposed to serve as a studio, and he returned there after the occupation of Prague in 1941. Technique: Fired clay, Signed: Unsigned
