This work was issued for the magazine Ladies Home Companion in 1928. Exceptionally rendered example depicting the young woman under the live oaks of Charleston, South Carolina. The work is signed lower right and has the original titled label on verso. This was one of Mrs. Brafords prized possessions and held a very special place in her home. Framed: H47 1/2" W42" Sold from the Braford Collection, Natural Bridge, Virginia.

Walter Biggs (American, 1886-1968), A Long Wait oil on canvas, signed and dated 1912 at lower left, framed. Stretcher size 25 1/2 x 33 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 32 3/4 x 40 1/4 in. During the 1920s and 1930s Biggs acquired a national reputation as a leading illustrator. His romantic, impressionistic style, the beauty and artistic quality of his palette, and his mastery of images of the American South impressed the art editors of major magazines. He also became a popular advertising artist, portraying products of major manufacturers in engaging settings that appealed to readers of mass magazines. Biggs' work appeared in nearly all of them, including Cosmopolitan Magazine, Ladies' Home Journal, McCall's, Saturday Evening Post, Scribner's, and Vogue. One side, illustration panting of young woman in white gown and older woman in blue dress in conversation. Interior scene with dresser, mirror, and chair with hat box. Signed lower right, "Walter Biggs/date ?". 33" x 24" s.s., in silverleaf and painted frame to 39" x 30". Verso, in landscape format showing tree, figures on path, and iron fence. Is a Salem, VA street scene - the tree and studio are still standing. 24" x 33" s.s., in late 20th century gold frame to 30" x 39". Sandwiched to recto painting. Along with a wooden adjustable display easel, 37" H. with 63" L. peg adjusted segment. Brand was born at 300 Second Street. Illustrator Walter Biggs? mother and sister lived next door and Walter himself was a friend of the family who played bridge with Mr. Brand?s father. The tree in the painting was in the Biggs? front yard, and Mr. Brand would climb it while growing up. Mr. Brand later bought the painting of the tree at a Walter Biggs estate auction in the late 1960?s, and after sending it to be cleaned, it was discovered that the painting was actually two-sided. On the verso, a Harper's Bazaar painting was revealed.
