Boleslaw Biegas, Polish, 1877 to 1954, oil painting on canvas depicting a night seascape scene with two mermaids. Signed, lower right. Framed. Boleslaw Biegas was a Polish artist, known for Modernist female figure sculpture and painting. Boleslaw Biegas, whose real name was Biegalski, was a Symbolist painter, sculptor, writer and playwright born in 1877 in Koziczyn, near Warsaw, Poland, and died in Paris in 1954. Hailed as a new Giotto, like Berger, after studying at Krakows Academy of Fine Arts, he joined the Viennese Secession, before settling in Paris in his rue de Bagneux studio. His primitive looking, monolithic, totemic sculpture is reminiscent of dark, spiritual imagery, the cycles of which are numerous: mysterious castles, infinite mysticism, war vampires recalling Balkan legends. One of a kind artwork.

Project of figure for Secqueville-Hoyau cooler plug, signed on the bottom: B. Biegas. Bolesław Biegas (1877–1954) was a Polish, surrealist and Symbolist painter and sculptor. Biegas was born in Koziczyn, Poland and orphaned at a young age. He began studying sculpture in Warsaw in the studio of a local sculptor, Antoni Panasiuk, then studied art under Konstanty Laszczka at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. After being expelled for his sculpture The Book of Life, Biegas moved permanently to Paris, where he briefly attended the École des Beaux-Arts before beginning his independent artistic activity. Boleslas biegas, la nostalgia del povero, 1905 ca. 01 From 1900, his works were exhibited in several Salons, including the parisian Galerie des Artistes Modernes and Galerie Arts et Artistes Anglais, and galleries in London, St. Petersburg and Kiev. Biegas also created a series of Symbolist style paintings, featuring mythical, monstrous and female chimeras, which symbolised a violent battle of the sexes. Biegas established a small museum for his art in 1950, in Paris, France, called the Musée Boleslas Biegas. It is located within the Polish Library in Paris in the 4th arrondissement of Paris at 6, Quai d'Orléans. The museum contains his own paintings and sculpture, as well as other Polish artists active from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century, including Olga Boznańska and Tadeusz Makowski. The museum occupies one room in the Polish Library in Paris, which also houses the Musée Adam Mickiewicz and the Salon Frédéric Chopin. Guided visits are available Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings by prior appointment; an admission fee is charged.

He developed close relations with the Polish artistic community and quickly became friends with Baron Henryk Trutschel and his wife Jadwiga who financed castings of most of his sculptures. In 1902 he successfully exhibited at the Salon National des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later that year his sculptures were published in Editions de la Plume, an important art publication of the period. Biegas’ artistic techniques were very modern for the time and influenced many of the early 20th -century art movements, including Cubism and Orphism. Although, the artist utilized many different styles throughout his career, it is for the series of sculptures created in the period of 1902-1904, he is considered by many as a predecessor of avant-garde and abstract art. One of the most notable examples of the artist’s abstractionism style in sculpture, bust Le Sphinx, is in the permanent collection of Musee d’Orsay in Paris. The present lot Burza is executed in expressionistic style with elements of Art Nouveau and was most likely created in the spring or fall of 1903. This esoteric approach referring to Greek mythology was further exploit by the artist in his later sculptures dedicated to the composers Beethoven and Wagner.
