Charles Biederman USA #10 Structurist Relief 1937

        Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Charles Biederman, born Karel Joseph Biederman (American, 1906-2004). Painted wood wall sculpture titled "Work No. 10, USA, 1937" depicting slats of orange, yellow, and blue against a white background, 1937. With a Menconi & Schoelkopf, New York, gallery label affixed to the crate. Provenance: Estate of Charles Biederman; Estate of Mary Abbott. Lot Essay: Born to Czech parents in Cleveland in 1906, Biederman was involved in the American art scene for his entire life. He briefly studied at the Cleveland Art Institute and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) before dropping out and moving to New York. It was there that he met and was included in shows with other influential artists of the time including Alexander Calder, John Ferren, George L.K. Morris, and Charles Green Shaw. For nine months from 1936-37 Biederman studied in Paris. It was here that he met and was influenced by leading artists including Picasso, Mondrian, and Miro. He was initially influenced by the works of Fernand Leger before moving away from his style and towards totally abstract, geometric compositions. The movements of Cezanne, Post-Impressionism, and Cubism informed the evolution of his style. And while he started out painting, he abandoned two-dimensional for more sculptural works by the end of 1937. In 1941 he married Mary Moore Biederman and in the following year he moved to Red Wing, Minnesota, where he would spend the rest of his life. In the 1950s, he created the term "Structurism" to help define his works from Constructivism and De Stijl. Many prominent collections around the world contain Structurist Reliefs including The Whitney Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Tate, London. In 2004, Beiderman died at the age of 98 and his estate was subsequently given to the Weisman Art Museum on the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus. They have organized traveling exhibitions of his works.

Charles (Karel Joseph) Biederman American, (1906-2004) Untitled (Bird Forms), 1937 purple ink on paper signed and dated lower right. Inscribed lower. Provenance: From a private collector, Indianapolis. Biography from Kramer Gallery, Inc. Abstract artist and theorist Charles Biederman began his career as a painter in Paris and New York in the 1930s. Although his biomorphic abstractions were praised by critics and included in important exhibits, Biederman rejected involvement with the art establishment and settled in rural Red Wing, Minnesota in 1942. Living and working in voluntary isolation from global art centers, he refined his Cubist and Constructivist-influenced works into three-dimensional wall works with a "machine aesthetic" of industrial materials and surfaces, wires, strings, primary colors and other modern means. Biederman's signature works of later decades are painted aluminum reliefs, in which small rectangular elements project from a flat vertical surface at varying angles. Meticulously crafted, the multicolored pieces combine Mondrian-like composition with the little third dimension of low-relief sculpture. Biederman wrote and self-published a number of densely philosophical treatises on art and nature, including "Art as the Evolution of Visual Knowledge" (1948), "The New Cezanne: From Monet to Mondriaan" (1958) and "Search for New Arts" (1979). An archive of Biederman's artworks and papers is at the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Written and submitted by Thomas O'Sullivan, museum curator and freelance writer.

Charles Biederman, American, 1906-2004. New York, Minnesota, Ohio. Abstract sculpture relief, painting. Influences: Cubism, Constructivism. “Work No. 4” is incised signed and dated and titled on verso: © COPYRIGHT CHARLES BIEDERMAN-1988 WORK NO. 4, NR, 1984-86. Charles Biederman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before travelling to Europe, where he met Piet Mondrian and Fernand Leger, who would both influence his work. After Europe, he decided to cease painting biomorphic abstractions in order to take up sculpting. He later began constructing three-dimensional structurist reliefs out of aluminum which he considered to be neither sculpture or painting. The reliefs from Biederman’s mature art career are what the artist is known for, which present actual color, form, light, and space without any illusionism. These works were seldom titled, though some were identified by where he was at while in the act of painting the sculpted form. His three-dimensional works carry a machine aesthetic stemming from hard media. These highly refined reliefs are finished in fantastically vivid colors and breathtaking, polished surfaces. “Work No. 4” is an exceptional example of Biederman’s most prized body of work. Biederman is established in the art historical cannon not only for pioneering structuralism that relied upon the underlying structure of nature, but by his self-published books on art theory as well. Keywords: Structuralist, Cubist, Constructivist.

Charles Biederman, American, 1906-2004. New York, Minnesota, Ohio. Abstract sculpture relief, painting. Influences: Cubism, Constructivism. “Untitled (Stained Glass)” 1991, is signed, dated and editioned X-I lower left. The date bears a copyright logo, and there is a second range of dates written 1935-1991. The reliefs from his mature art career are what the artist is known for, which present actual color, form, light, and space without any illusionism. These works were seldom titled, though some were identified by where he was at while in the act of painting. His three-dimensional works carry a machine aesthetic, which usually stems from the medium of aluminum, but in this instance is presented in glass and the metal boundary lines and is seen also in the highly angular forms. Biederman often used primary colors, we see that here in his use of blue and yellow. Like his reliefs, this stained glass work retains dimension and utilizes planes of color. Biederman is established in the art historical cannon not only for pioneering structuralism that relied upon the underlying structure of nature, but by his self-published books on art theory as well. Keywords: Structuralist, Cubist, Constructivist.
