    CHARLES BIDDLE

    Est: $300 - $400

(1745 - 1821) Pennsylvania statesman that served as the seventh Vice-President of the state from 1785 to 1787. PAYMENT FOR THE SURGEON OF THE CONTINENTAL 'INVALID CORPS' Excellent association D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Philadelphia, April 11, 1786, ordering the state treasurer to pay one 'Doctor Matthew Maus, Surgeon, late of the Pennsylvania Line, the sum of fifty four pounds thirteen shillings and seven pence'. Also signed at upper-left by JOHN NICHOLSON (1757 - 1800), the comptroller general of Pennsylvania and partner of Signer Robert Morris. MATTHEW MAUS affixes his signature at lower-left. Two vertical folds, else very good. Maus was the doubtlessly busy surgeon of the 'Invalid Corps', a group of approximately 1,000 disabled Continental Army veterans, established by the Continental Congress to serve as guards at magazines, hospitals, and similar establishments. The Commander Lewis Nicola drew the 'Plan of the English Lines near Philadelphia', which showed the locations of important fortifications from the Delaware River to Schuylkill River. Despite this success, the handicapped corps received no pay for over eight months, froze and starved during the harsh winters of 1777 and 1778, suffered frequent illness, lack of clean water, and worries of British incursions, and relocated frequently throughout the war. After years of hardship, a captain of the corps complained directly to George Washington about Nicola's mistreatment, going so far as to call for his arrest.
