    A trompe l'oeil still life of a butterfly and an assortment of prints after Jacques Callot, David Teniers II, Salvator Rosa and Jacques-Louis David signed and dated 'plume de jpx Bidauld 1766' and with inscription 'f.' pen and black ink, watercolor 10 7/8 x 14 in. (275 x 355 mm.) NOTES Born in Carpentras in 1745, Bidauld moved to Lyon at an early age, where he befriended the amateur artist Jean-Jacques de Boissieu. He specialized in flower paintings and views of Lyon and his first dated works are from 1765. He also engraved a number of landscapes (S. Gutwirth, in the exhibition catalogue, Jean-Joseph Xavier Bidauld, Carpentras, 1978, figs. 1-2), and was the first teacher of his brother, the landscape artist Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld (1758-1846).
