Big enamel sign / porcelain sign, convex, thickly stenciled, lithographed, Vevey/CH 1934, 69 x 99 cm, signed: KB (Karl Bickel, 1886-1982, an important Swiss artist and commercial artist). A masterpiece of advertising art with an eventful history: the sign was discovered by chance during a bicycle tour in the 1970s in the canton Schwyz in the upper Lake Zurich region. It was hanging untouched on a barn wall next to a Chocmel lady. Since the signs would have been difficult to transport by bicycle, the men decided to return by car later. A week went by and when they stood in front of the barn the next weekend, the signs were gone. What initially sounds like a collector's nightmare had a happy ending. After a moment of shock, they rang the doorbell of the neighbouring house, where they were informed that the signs had been (fortunately carefully) removed because the barn was to be painted in the next few days. They were allowed to be loaded into the car for a small fee. Even today, it is a sensational find, which now enriches this auction as the spearhead of an unprecedented collection of chocolate advertising. The production could hardly be of higher quality - the Cailler children seem to have been unaffected by the wind and weather for decades. The gloss and colours are in outstanding condition, scratches are nowhere to be found. A real treat - only one other example in such fine condition is known.

Upon seeing Michelangelo's Medici Tombs at the Chapel of San Lorenzo, he had an aesthetic revelation. In Carrara, he sniffed the marble as it was hauled from the quarries. And his art was transformed. This 1937 work for Zurich tourism bears it out: a bather, posed as if a Sybil supporting a plinth, molded with the physicality of a Renaissance sculpture, colored as if a minor figure on the Sistine Chapel's ceiling. It's but the little touches the sailing yachts at raked angles, the sans-serif, jangly typography that rewrite the Renaissance into the language of Swiss Art Deco. (Art Deco; Travel)

The nice colour lithograph by Swiss artist and graphic artist Karl Bickel depicts a mountain in rusty red colour with the writing in German “Arosa, 1800 M electr. train Chur-Arosa Switzerland“. The illustration depicts the place Arosa with Weisshorn, Brüggerhorn and below Tschuggen mountains. There are also a few houses illustrated in the valley. The railway line from Chur to Arosa is 25.681 kilometres in length and it takes up to about one hour. All in all, the train overrides 115 difference in altitude. The paper is mounted on Japan paper. The advertising poster holds the printer’s and the artist’s name in German “Graphic Studio J.E. Wolfensberger Zurich”, and “K. Bickel”. The paper shows some age-related signs of wear and use, like folds and waves. The edge displays marks of a previous framing. The dimensions amount to 128 x 91 cm. Karl Bickel (1886-1982) Karl Bickel was born in 1886 in Zurich. At the age of 14, he began to train as lithograph and cliché drawer at the studio of Paul Bleuer. Bickel founded his own graphic studio in 1908, and he received commissions for letterheads, corporate references, and fashion booklets. He constructed the peace monument Paxmal in Walenstadtberg. Bickel died in 1982 on Schrina-Hochrugg. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

In passe-partoutKarl Bickel absolvierte ein Lehre als Lithograph. 1908 - 1912 Erfolg mit seinem eigenen Reklameatelier, z.B. mit Modekatalogen für die Firma Grieder. Er hatte einen bedeutenden Anteil an der Blüte des Schweizer Plakats der 1910er und 1920er Jahre. Seine Arbeiten zeichnen sich aus durch Anleihen an den Jugendstil, Kubismus, Expressionismus und später durch eine vereinfachende Monumentalität und intensive Farben. Um 1920 wird Bickels Zürcher Wohnhaus zu einem Literaten-, Tänzer- und Künstlertreffpunkt. 1924 Übersiedlung nach Walenstadtberg und Beginn der Arbeiten am monumentalen, tempelartigen Paxmal. Für die PTT prägte er über vier Jahrzehnte die Schweizer Briefmarken. 1966 schenkte er das Paxmal den schweizerischen PTT-Betrieben

This early Art Deco poster, in its light and inspired mannerist approach, is somewhat reminiscent of Loupot's work.
