They had the same teacher: Cornelis Cruseman. Nicolaas Pieneman was also an important teacher of Beynon. After their studies, Beynon returned to the Dutch East Indies in 1855, while Raden Saleh stayed in Europe for a longer period of time. P.J. Veth wrote in the catalogue of the World Expo 1883, Groep I, p. 54: 'Among all those who have been involved in painting Javanese landscapes and scenes from native life, the first place seems to belong to the Batavia native Beynon, who died too early, and whose fertile brush left us a number of very beautiful canvases'.
