Set of four Polaroid prints on irregularly cut paper, possibly internal dye diffusion transfer prints. 52 x 44 inches (arrangment of 4 images), 58 x 47 inches (papers). Each panel has a central image which is 24 x 20 inches, plus the polaroid chemical areas. Unsigned. In the early 90, working with a large Polaroid camera, Dawoud Bey often signed on a label accompanying the work, but this piece has no accompanying label. This background and chair can be found in other Dawoud Bey portraits in this style and format. For instance, the work Kenosha II, from 1996, in collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, has this chair, this background, a similar pose and arrangement, identical lighting and matching chemical markings surrounding the main images.

Commissioned by The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia College, Chicago in 2007. This portrait was included in 2014 Whitney Biennial. Born in New York City, Dawoud Bey received his MFA from Yale University in 1993 and is the recent recipient of the MacArthur fellowship or "genius grant" and fellowships from the New York Foundation of the Arts, Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. He began his first series of photographs titled Harlem, USA in 1975 which was later exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979. Bey is well known for his recent work, Birmingham: Four Girls and Two Boys, a project that features photographic pairing focused on the tragic events surrounding the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. His work has been exhibited extensively, including internationally, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Barbican Centre in London, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the High Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

In 1975 Dawoud Bey began his series Harlem, USA, a personal exploration for the artist originally from Queens. The series spanning four years chronicles communities in Harlem which Bey immersed himself in, as a means of understanding his family history and the historically significant, albeit controversial exhibition Harlem on My Mind (1969) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Another print of this photograph was exhibited in the exhibition Dawoud Bey's Harlem, USA, Studio Museum of Harlem, New York, 2010-2011.

DAWOUD BEY (1953 - ) Set of five silver prints from Street Portrait series. Each 311x241 mm; 12 1/4x9 1/2 inches. Each titled and dated 1988 in pencil, verso. With one additionally signed and dated 1990 in pencil, verso. Includes: A Girl With School Metals * Joana * One of the Girls From Next Door * A Man Wearing an Adami Baseball Cap * Poppye. In 1988, Dawoud Bey began the Street Portrait series, making portraits in the Brooklyn neighborhood where he lived at the time. Using Polaroid Type P/N film, he was able to give an instant print to the subjects while keeping the instant negatives, which he would use later to make exhibition prints. Unlike his Harlem, USA photographs, these pictures are more directed and posed. It was Bey's intention to allow the subjects of the Street Portrait photographs to direct their gaze at the camera, and by extension, the viewer.
