      Jun. 27, 2024

MIGUEL DE BERRIO (POTOSÍ, BOLIVIA, 1706 – CIRCA 1762)

      Est: €35,000 - €45,000

Miguel de Berrio (Potosí, Bolivia, 1706 – circa 1762) "Lutgardis of Aywières" Oil on canvas. 90 x 64 cm. Gaspar Miguel de Berrío was a painter, son of Diego Berrío and Juana Bravo de Laguna, active between 1735 and 1762. He was mostly raised in the town of Puna, Potosí in what is now Bolivia. The majority of his artworks can be traced as he tended to sign and date them. He is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Potosí School, following Melchor Pérez de Holguín, who was his master and who had a striking and significant influence on him, especially in his early paintings. Later, he decided to move away from his old master's style to adopt that typical of indigenous painters, which valued gilding and usually had highly idealised figures in its compositions, as mentioned by the Royal Academy of History. Attributed to Gaspar Miguel de Berrio (Potosí, Bolivia, 1706 - 1762)

      Est: €40,000 - €50,000

Attributed to Gaspar Miguel de Berrio (Potosí, Bolivia, 1706 - 1762) "Our Lady of the Rosary with Saint Dominic and Saint Francis of Assisi, with Souls in Purgatory" Oil on canvas. 200 x 140 cm. A New Spanish depiction of Our Lady of the Rosary, floating amidst the glory of 15 mysteries of the life of her Divine Son. A catechetical representation of the Mother of God under this invocation, the Rosary, a traditional Catholic prayer that seeks to honour the Virgin Mary. Initially, it consisted of fifteen "mysteries" that recalled joyful, sorrowful, and glorious moments in the life of Jesus and Mary. At her feet, at prayer, Saint Dominic is on the left and Saint Francis of Assisi is on the right, the patrons of two Orders of Preachers and Mendicants who journeyed to the Americas to preach, baptise, and save souls for Christ and His Church. The artwork aims to convey this simple devotion and catechise, serving as a means to deliver souls from Purgatory. This important painter worked in Potosí, in the Viceroyalty of Peru, in High Peru, which is now Bolivia.  Gaspar Miguel de Berrío is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Potosí School, after Melchor Pérez de Holguín, who was his teacher. His religious-themed paintings are reminiscent of Spanish tenebrism, as we see in this beautiful painting with a black background with contrasting gold leaf. We can found his works at National Museum of Art of Bolivia, La Paz, the Potosí Mint Museum, in Bolivia, the Cerro Rico and la Villa Imperial, the Museo de Charcas, Sucre; at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Chile and the Isaac Fernández Blanco Museum of Hispanic American Art in Buenos Aires, among others.
