(Wuppertal-Elberfeld 1904–1981 St. Veit i. Jauntal / Carinthia) Mohnknospen mit Vogelscheuche (Poppy buds with scarecrow), 1953, monogrammed W. B., handwritten note on the reverse of the original stretcher about the date of the primer (“III / 53”), the canvas and the composition of the primer, oil on canvas, 50 x 110 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Austria, since the 1950s We are grateful to Dr. Harald Scheicher for his help in cataloguing this work and for the inclusion in the catalogue raisonné under the number 423b. Intense colors of blue, green and violet contrasting with yellow, red and pink are Werner Berg’s preferred colors in his later oeuvre after 1945. Integrated into strict formal boundaries, colors lose their purely expressive character and become a sculptural, symbolic form themselves. In his pictures of flowers in the field, the artist also opted for an extreme close-up view and a perspective that moves from bottom to top. In this newly discovered painting, this also lends the flowers and as yet unblossomed poppy capsules something monumental and an appealing dialectic between immediacy and distance. The conclusion with a broom covered by a headscarf lends a humorous accent to the already endearing subject matter. “Die Gegenstände bilden eine Zange ganz besonderer Art zur Wirklichkeitsbe- und ergreifung.“ Werner Berg “The objects form a very special kind of forceps for understanding and grasping reality.” Werner Berg

WERNER BERG: HEIMWÄRTS NACH DEM WIESENMARKT

      Est: €80,000 - €160,000

Werner Berg Heimwärts nach dem Wiesenmarkt 1963 oil on canvas; framed 65 x 75 cm monogrammed on the lower left: W. B. private property, Austria Wieland Schmied et al., Werner Berg. Gemälde, mit einem Werkverzeichnis von Harald Scheicher, Klagenfurt 1994, cat. no. 677, b/w-ill. p. 292 Each year at the beginning of September, Werner Berg visited the Bleiburger Wiesenmarkt ("Bleiburg Meadow Market") – a three-day folk festival that has been held for over 600 years, where the rural population from far and wide stocked up on everything they needed for the winter and the coming year, ranging from everyday necessities, clothing or horses to agricultural machinery, with the proceeds of the past harvest. Vendors from near and far offered their wares and the drinking and partying in large marquees went on until late into the night. Standing on the edge of the hustle and bustle, Werner Berg captured market life in numerous sketches year after year. In the studio, these were then turned into oil paintings, which, with their predominantly intensive colours, form a separate series of works in his richly varied oeuvre. Late at night, by the glow of a streetlamp, he watched the drunk, frequently staggering revellers on their way home – as here, in front of the bright yellow, glowing façade of a house which stands out against the dark, nocturnal surroundings. The colourful, loud, hectic hustle and bustle of the Wiesenmarkt stood in stark contrast to the staid peace and quiet of his remote Rutarhof farm. "One of my contrasting themes is, in particular, the Wiesenmarkt, whose life at night has always been of special interest to me," the artist said, adding: "Sometimes I feel drawn to subjects that are contrary to what is expected of me. Things that are simply necessary as a counter pole to the purely rural world. In general, I believe that such subjects, in no matter how narrow a context, gain relevance due to their dichotomy." (Harald Scheicher)

Werner Berg Sonnenblumen 1975 oil on canvas; framed 76 x 120.5 cm monogrammed on the lower right: W.B. from the artist's family, private property, Carinthia Wieland Schmied et al., Werner Berg. Gemälde, mit einem Werkverzeichnis von Harald Scheicher, Klagenfurt 1994, cat. no. 1035, ill. p. 317 "Here, the motif is completely permeated by the rhythm and vivid colour of the sunflowers that we grow in the field, ripe for harvest," Werner Berg explained regarding this picture. A sunflower field was an integral part of the crop rotation in the fields of his Rutar farm. After settling in Carinthia in 1931, he ran the mountain farm with his family over decades of what was at times hard, demanding work. "Our old farm, which is situated on the south-western corner of a ground-down mountain plateau with a magnificent vista, is by no means a large estate and doesn’t allow us any great luxuries. Our agricultural activities are varied – with horses, cattle, pigs and all kinds of arable farming, and there’s no lack of fruit and vegetables. By economic standards everything may be quite ridiculous, but we have other standards. No romantic notions beguiled me when I once settled down on this mountain – I just wanted to be able to live and work independently," Werner Berg wrote. As with all his paintings of the farm and its immediate surroundings, he painted the sunflowers directly from life in the open air and subsequently refined the expression of the painting to a final clarity in the studio. This distinguishes these paintings from his many others, which were always created in the studio based on pencil sketches made when he was out and about. Werner Berg often affirmed that he could only paint things that were part of his life – which, due to his direct involvement, made it possible for him to do "existential painting", a pictorial parable of reality. This is particularly evident in his depictions of sunflowers, which he himself planted in spring and watched over in their soaring growth until the ripe heads were harvested. Powerfully proclaiming how successfully they have flourished up to the harvest, the four individual flowerheads stand out brilliantly against a darker sky – which, in the summer heat, seems to herald the threat of an approaching thunderstorm. (Harald Scheicher)

      WERNER BERG: WEGGABELUNG

Werner Berg Weggabelung 1962 oil on canvas; framed 75 x 120 cm monogrammed on the lower left: W. B. private property, Austria Wieland Schmied et al., Werner Berg. Gemälde, mit einem Werkverzeichnis von Harald Scheicher, Klagenfurt 1994, cat. no. 633, b/w-ill. p. 289 (there with the dimensions 63 x 89 cm) "As much as the landscape means to me and as much as the flowers delight me, it is the human being that is at the centre of my work – the real theme of my painting. How reality transforms into the pictorial and emerges in a new, artistic form." (Werner Berg) A special feature of Werner Berg's depictions of figures is their inseparable connection with the surrounding landscape. Here, a father and mother and their child meet a woman and a boy at a fork in the road, while at the upper left edge of the picture, barely noticeable at first glance, a man is walking away. Through the composition, which was intuitively created at the very moment of making the sketch, the painter manages to integrate the people into their living environment. The everyday occurrence becomes a pictorial phenomenon in which the coincidental meeting of the figures lends the picture dynamism and a tranquil feeling of suspense. Time and again, in numerous paintings, Werner Berg has reconfigured the theme of groups of figures in a landscape. It is to his credit, in a time of increasingly rapid changes of style and modes of expression, that he has persistently focused on one area and plumbed its depths. To make a little world into an allegory of our human existence through the process of depiction was to become Werner Berg’s life’s work. (Harald Scheicher)

      Berg, Werner: Junge Familie

      Est: €1,200 - €1,500

Junge Familie -- Radierung auf Velin. 1927. -- 25 x 17,8 cm (40 x 29 cm). -- Signiert "Werner Berg". -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

      Est: €80,000 - €120,000

Monogrammed 'W.B.'. “When I am asked why I stick to concrete objects in my painting, I have to confess, somewhat perplexed, that this ‘why’ has never existed for me. The real artistic decisions are beyond such questions and doubts. [...] The compulsion to work, the rhythm of life according to the seasons and its very real concerns have always seemed to me more conducive to artistic creation than a hindrance, no matter how one might curse it at times. Every step fills those capable of seeing with perspective. The concern for growth, development, or destruction does not leave much space for the arbitrariness of dissecting or dissolving the ‘object’; the objects that are field and forest, flower and cattle, and repeatedly, mankind.” (Werner Berg, quoted in: Werner Berg, Gemälde, Klagenfurt 1994, p.7). Werner Berg, who was born in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal), completed a commercial apprenticeship and studied constitutional law before breaking with his previous path in life, studying painting and settling in the secluded Carinthian lowlands (Austria) in 1930. With the management of his mountain farm and the accompanying immersion in the laws of nature and the harsh reality of the life of the locals, Berg discovered the foundations of his artistic expression, which was influenced by Expressionism and Magic Realism: he depicted the scenes of everyday rural life in reduced clear forms with defined contours and in bright colours. The ‘boys playing skittles' of the village are a frequently represented motif of the 1960s and 1970s. The artist transforms the various constellations of figures into exciting compositions, characterised by outlines in cool shades of blue and a magical atmosphere of light.
