Róbert Berény Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1887 - d. 1953

Róbert Berény (1887 – 1953, in Budapest) was a Hungarian painter, one of the avant-garde group known as The Eight who introduced cubism and expressionism to Hungarian art in the early twentieth century before the First World War. He had studied and exhibited in Paris as a young man and was also considered one of the Hungarian Fauves.

Róbert Berény was born in Budapest in 1887. As a young man of 17, in 1904 he studied under the artist Tivadar Zemplényi for several months before moving to study at the Académie Julian in Paris.

While there, Berény was particularly influenced by the power of Paul Cézanne's art. He also adopted some of the uses of color of the Fauve movement, and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne with French artists of the Fauvists.

Berény is best known for his form of expressionism and cubism, which he developed in association with the avant-garde group known as The Eight, who had their first exhibit together in Budapest in 1909. They included the leader Károly Kernstok, Lajos Tihanyi, Béla Czóbel, Dezso Czigány, Ödön Márffy, Dezso Orbán, and Bertalan Pór. He brought to them French influences from his time in Paris.

At their next exhibition, in 1911, the group identified as A Nyolcak, or "The Eight." They essentially formed the core of modernist experimentation, and were part of radical intellectual currents in music and literature, as well. Berény's most important work of this early period is his portrait of the composer Béla Bartók (1913). That year he also painted Scene.

In 1919, Berény participated in the art life of the brief Hungarian Democratic Republic, and was the leader of the department for painting in the Art Directorate. After the fall of the republic that year, Berény emigrated to Berlin, together with numerous other Hungarian artists and writers. He lived and worked there for several years, continuing his emphasis on cubism and expressionism. He did not return to Hungary until 1926.

After 1934, he worked in Zebegény, near the Danube Bend in northern Hungary. He was awarded the Szinnyei Prize in 1936.

During the last year of World War II, Berény's atelier was destroyed, together with many of his works. After the war, under the communist government, he became a teacher in what is now the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. He died in 1953.

Since the late twentieth century and the political changes in eastern Europe, there has been renewed interest in Hungary's early modernist artists. The exhibits below have honored Berény and others of The Eight, and two bracket the centenary of their first exhibit in 1911 under that name.

Róbert Berény, Hungarian 1887 – 1953- Zebegény, circa 1937; oil on canvas., signed lower left,

          Est: £5,000 - £8,000

Róbert Berény, Hungarian 1887 – 1953- Zebegény, circa 1937; oil on canvas., signed lower left, 60x73.5cm (ARR) Provenance: The work originally belonged to the vendor’s grandfather, Paul Szeben, the brother-in-law of the writer Ladislas Dormandi, who was married to Bereny's pupil Olga Szekely-Kovacs. It has remained in the same family since. Note: Gergely Barki has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this piece. The present work is by the painter Róbert Berény, who exerted an immense influence on the artistic landscape of his native Hungary. Berény was a member of The Eight, alongside seven other prominent Hungarian artists, including Károly Kernstok, Béla Czóbel, and Ödön Márffy. This group played a significant role in the introduction of Expressionism, Cubism, and Fauvism (that is, some of the defining artistic movements of early twentieth-century Europe) to Hungary. Berény was undoubtedly informed in this approach by his encounters with these radical artistic developments during his time in Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts and the Académie Julian, and was taught by Jean Paul Laurens. Berény was therefore at the forefront of the avant-garde movement in Hungary, shaping the subsequent artistic and cultural development of the country. Indeed, the impact of French art on Berény’s work is undeniable, with the influence of artists such as Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh evident in the composition and style of Berény’s paintings, especially in his tendency to depict flattened forms by applying paint in broad swathes of undifferentiated and somewhat unrealistic colour. This particular work suggests Berény’s debt to Post-Impressionism, with the loose application of paint creating slightly abstracted and distorted forms which imbue the piece with a sense of the freedom and vitality of the natural scene which it depicts. These swirling brushstrokes create a feeling of movement which most obviously recall the work of Van Gogh. Berény’s work was exhibited throughout his lifetime, including at the Ernst Museum in Budapest, at the National Salon in 1929 and 1932, and he represented Hungary at the Venice Biennales of 1928, 1934, and 1936. Works by Berény are in the collections of the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs, and the Deák Collection in Székesfehérvár, and have been exhibited as far afield as the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California. Condition A / A-: minor creases and abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. Berény was a painter, who studied in Paris at the Academie Julien before returning to Hungary where he joined the Modernist painter's group, The Eight, [Nyolcak]. He fought during the First World War, but left Hungary to live in Berlin in the early 1920s. When he returned to Hungary in 1926, he established himself as one of the foremost modern graphic designers in the country. His designs, along with the work of Alexander (Sandor) Bortnyik, set the standard for Hungarian graphic modernism. "The birth of the modern Hungarian poster is closely connected with two artists. Their entirely individual posters were free of all external influence, and thus prepared a real revolution in Hungarian poster art . . . we can positively assert that that the first posters of Robert Berény and Alexander Bortnyik mark a new epoch in the Hungarian poster and advertising art" (Commercial Art, September 1930 p. 106). This unusual and previously unrecorded poster promotes a brand of hoses for clients in Palestine. As there is no printing information, it is uncertain where the poster was printed, and unclear how Berény would have received this commission. What is clear though, is his bold graphic design, with its simple, strong color scheme, in which a man appears to be wrestling with a serpent. Rare-previously unrecorded.
