    • Paul Berdanier (1879-1961) Montauk Lighthouse Impressionist Sunset Seascape Exhibited Oil Painting
      Nov. 03, 2024

Paul Berdanier (1879-1961) Montauk Lighthouse Impressionist Sunset Seascape Exhibited Oil Painting

      Est: $1,000 - $3,000

Important exhibited Montauk lighthouse seascape painting by Paul Frederick Berdanier, Sr. (1879 - 1961). Exhibited at the Salmagundi Club. Oil on board. Signed. Framed. Measuring 13.5 by 17.5 inches overall and 12 by 16 painting alone. Paul Berdanier was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He studied painting under American Impressionist Gustave Wolff at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts in Missouri. Wolff had studied at the school himself, under Paul Cornoyer, and taught Berdanier the Cornoyer manner of American Impressionism. Paul Berdanier became a teacher there (today's Washington University) also, in 1923. Cornoyer, Wolff, and Berdanier all ended up in New York after notable art careers in St. Louis. By 1925, just before Claude Monet passed away, Paul Berdanier was working out of France. During his 4 years there, he exhibited at the various Salons (des Beaux Arts, Nautique, d'Hiver, and Automne). He was an acclaimed artist in France. The Museum of Fine Arts, Moret acquired one of his paintings. In 1929, Berdanier relocated to New York City. He lived in Jackson Heights, NYC's Queens borough, on Long Island. Berdanier loved painting on Long Island because he noticed the humidity there caused color and light effects much like he'd experienced in parts of France. He became a Member of NY arts organizations such as the Hudson Valley Art Association and the Art League of Long Island. He also exhibited with groups like the Provincetown Art Association in MA (1931, #77, "Birds of the Sea") and the Allied Artists of America. He won numerous prizes, medals, and awards in such shows. The 1930's was a very difficult time for Americans but Paul Berdanier found ways to continue being successful in his art career. After moving to NYC, people were taken with his etchings. His most popular ones were of airplanes in flight and these were exhibited and sold by Kennedy Galleries. Another way he was able to take in money during the Great Depression was by doing illustration Art work, particularly on the character Tarzan. His Tarzan illustations appeared on book and (Tip Top) comic book covers in the 'Golden Age'. These sidelines plus paintings sales added up to Berdanier doing better than most artists were able to do back then. Please see all images for condition. Size is measured and written on the back of the painting. The first size is the overall size, the second size is the image size. For detailed condition questions please text 617-835-2496
