In addition to his skill with watercolors, Bennett was also a master of aquatint, and made prints after many of his own paintings. His first set of commissioned prints in New York, which were published as Megarey's Street Views in the City of New-York; are all scenes of Manhattan which he rendered first in watercolor, then as aquatints. While many other painters and printers worked on bucolic landscape views which were increasingly popular with the public, Bennett often chose cityscapes or street scenes as his subject. These subjects proved to be popular as well; Bennett exhibited his work regularly in the United States, and was sought after as an engraver and illustrator. In 1843 and 1844 he engraved ten illustrations for the pages of the New Mirror, a New York City literary publication issued weekly by George P. Morris and Nathaniel P. Willis. Jul. 17, 2021

BENNETT - View of NY Ruins, Great Fire 1836

          Est: $1,500 - $2,000

New York: Lewis P. Clover, 1836. Aquatint in colors by W. J. Bennett after Nicolino Calyo (1779-1884), with extensive additional hand-coloring in watercolor and with the hand-scribed borderline in black ink, characteristic of early printings. Sheet size: 19 1/4 x 24 3/4 inches. Re-backed with re-margined left and right sides. Repaired tears in the sky and in the bottom margin. The ruin on the left is the Old Garden Street Church; this aquatint is the only contemporary representation that we have of this church, as rebuilt in 1807 (Stokes, Iconography..., page 618). Nicolino Calyo, an Italian portrait and miniature artist emigrated from Italy in 1834. An eyewitness to the Great Fire of 1835, he sketched the catastrophe as it unfolded throughout the day and night. He later painted a number of compositions based on these sketches, in gouache, and some of these were used by Bennett to create his aquatint engravings of the fire and its aftermath. William James Bennett was born and studied in England, exhibiting romantic landscape subjects there between 1808 and 1825. In 1826 he moved to New York City. As well as engraving the compositions of other artists, including important compositions for John W. Hill, Bennett produced original aquatints after his own designs. Bennett's series of views of American Cities set a standard, and established a compositional formula, for topographical art in America for succeeding generations of artists in all media; they remain the most memorable and beautiful examples of the genre. Lewis P. Clover, the publisher, demonstrated impressive imagination and ingenuity in the copy for his advertisement promoting these views of the Great Fire: These beautiful ruins, he wrote, are fast disappearing, and in a few months no vestige of them will be left: in a few years, they will linger as a dream in the memory of the present generation, and the recollection of the most disastrous fire that ever befell this city will, like all earthly things, pass into oblivion..

          Jul. 17, 2021

BENNETT - West Point from Phillipstown

          Est: $750 - $1,500

Printed by Editions Alecto and Master Printer Edward Egerton-Williams, [circa 1980]. Aquatint engraving, printed in two colours, blue and sepia, and finished by hand in watercolour. Impression limited to 50 copies, from the original copper plate. In perfect condition. Image size: 16 x 22 1/2 inches. Sheet size: 25 11/16 x 31 7/8 inches. William James Bennett (c. 1787-1844) was born in England and received his training at the Royal Academy. He emigrated to the United States in 1826, and is best known for his views of American cities, including the Hudson Valley Region, Niagara Falls, and numerous port cities such as New York, Charleston, and Buffalo. Views of West Point were extremely popular in the nineteenth century and this view, after one of Bennett's best-known paintings, was exhibited at the Annual Exhibition of the National Academy in 1832. With the arrival of William Bennett and several other émigré artists such as William Guy Wall, and John Hill, the quality of aquatint engraving in America was elevated to a level equaling, or perhaps even surpassing, that of European printmakers. This was the beginning of an important period of American topographical-view making. The aquatint of West Point from Phillipstown was originally published in 1831 by Parker and Clover, who produced four states of the original edition, changing slightly the publication line as the business or printer changed. These four states were all published in a short period of time. The Parker and Clover edition was printed in two colours of ink, blue for the sky and sepia for the foreground, the print was then finished by hand in watercolour. Currier and Ives later acquired the copper plate, and published an issue of this print (not a lithograph as has been noted). As was a common practice of the day, the original publication line was polished out of the copper plate and was re-engraved to read Currier and Ives. The Currier and Ives aquatint was published in black and white, then coloured in the studio in the same manner as their very popular lithographs. The edition published by Parker and Clover and later by Currier and Ives from this copper plate must have been very limited as the printing caused very little wear to the plate. Whereas lithographs printed from limestone blocks will produce thousands of good quality prints, the copper plate of the aquatint is much more delicate and prints from copper plates do not print successfully in large numbers. The original copper plate engraved for this view remains in excellent condition, and, in this contemporary impression, was limited to 50 copies. Great care was taken to recreate the original 1831 publication techniques. Using an original first-issue print as a model, this aquatint was printed in two colours, blue and sepia, and then finished by hand with water-colour, in exactly the manner of the original edition. This is a time consuming and difficult process but the results are rewarding.

W J Bennett Aquatint of Mobile

          Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Mobile, taken from the marsh opposite the city near Pinto's Residence. William James Bennett (1787?1844). Hand-colored aquatint. c. 1841. 20 1/2 x 27 3/8 inches sheet, 32 x 39 inches framed. Between 1831 and 1842, Bennett, an English-born painter and engraver, produced an informal series of eighteen aquatint views of American cities, including this one of Mobile. Heavily influenced by the English topographical watercolor tradition, Bennett adopted the aquatint method of engraving, which produced tonal areas similar to ink wash. Thus aquatint engraving was ideally suited to translate the delicate effect of watercolor into the print medium, which enabled broad distribution of his work.
