JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "In the stable. Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 14 x 21 cm; 29 x 36 cm (frame). Brother of the painter Juan Antonio and the sculptor Mariano, José Benlliure cultivated mainly the costumbrista subject matter and the portrait, with a very personal style that portrayed both simple and grandiose subjects. He began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia, to later continue his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. In 1879, in view of his talent, he was sent to the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he became director between 1903 and 1913. In 1897 he made a trip to Tangier, Algeria and Morocco, where he produced more luminous and free works, with an impressionist influence. From 1900 onwards, his work depicts popular themes. He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, obtaining third medals in the editions of 1876 and 1878 and first in 1887, with his canvas "The vision of the Coliseum. The last martyr" (Prado). In his beginnings he dedicated himself to genre painting but later, advised by the Italian painter Domenico Morelli, he produced works of greater commitment, such as "San Vicente Ferrer preaching about the Last Judgment". In addition to the costumbrista themes, he worked on religious themes, with paintings in which there is a part of clear fantastic and symbolist evocation. A work that gave him very good results was the combination of the costumbrista with the religious, he developed works such as "Oyendo misa" or "Misa en la ermita". Like many artists of the time, he treated the subjects of altar boys, showing the mischief and mischief of children. Another facet of Benlliure has to do with the depiction of characters and places of his family environment, in which he transmits images of great freshness and colorfulness. He belonged to the Academies of San Fernando (Madrid), San Lucas (Rome), San Carlos (Valencia), Brera (Milan) and Munich. The most important part of his production is preserved in Valencia, in his House Museum and in the Museum of Fine Arts San Pío V. He is also represented in the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Palace of Charles V in Granada, among others.

        Est: €6,000 - €7,000

JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "In the Cellar". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 21.5 x 32.5 cm; 33 x 45 cm (frame). José Benlliure cultivated genre themes and portraits. In the present case, we are faced with a purely costumbrista scene. It depicts several figures around a table in what would have been a wine cellar. The scene plays with the light and the leftovers, creating various spaces. The main part of the scene features the figures seated at the table while a woman brings them a plate of food; the next scene is on the right, with a man eating, less well lit. The last scene, on the left, is free of characters and shows a staircase in semi-darkness. In short, we find a piece with exceptional detail, where every face, every architecture and every detail is worked to the millimetre, it is a piece with a lot of light as the central scene is very colourful. José Benlliure began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia, later continuing his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. From an early age he enjoyed the patronage of the King of Savoy and in 1879 he moved to Rome, where he was discovered by the important art dealer Martin Colnaghi, who financed his studies in the city. In 1897 he made several trips to Tangiers, Algeria and Morocco, where he approached the everyday world of the places he visited through a realistic, luminous and loose style of painting. As a spectator of reality, the author focuses his attention on the landscape and the atmosphere, a feature that can be seen in the technical way in which he approaches this work, based on color and the use of a vibrant brushstroke. The scene features a man leaning thoughtfully over a well. The subject matter links this work to one of the main pictorial trends in Spain in the 19th century, costumbrismo. Traditionally, Spanish painting and literature have been interested in popular customs and types. The arrival of romanticism enlivened this current, bringing to the Hispanic tradition the vision that foreigners had of our people, due to the snobbery of a Europeanizing and liberal national bourgeoisie that, also by foreign influence and under the romantic fashion, turns its eyes to the people and the monuments of the past. José Benlliure began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia, and then continued his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. From an early age he enjoyed the patronage of the King of Savoy and in 1879 he moved to Rome, where he was discovered by the important art dealer Martin Colnaghi, who financed his studies in the city. In this group portrait, each of the costumbrista types have been connoted with individualized personalities. Psychological depth and meticulous verism characterize this work. The characters appear in the foreground, against a neutral background that highlights the figures. An old man who seems dejected, while the child sings happily, thus becoming a metaphor for life and the different stages of life. JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "Aquelarre". Oil on canvas. Signed in the upper left corner. Provenance: Juan Molina collection. Measurements: 25 x 35 cm; 45 x 55 cm (frame). This painting suggests more than it shows, achieving with great formal economy to make us enter in a council of demonic creatures. Witchy faces with sharp noses and toothless mouths, resolved with an ingenious broken stroke and a quick pulse, are lined up before a group of demons playing clarinets and a chorus of little red devils dancing. The women are wrapped under their black robes, as if they were nuns who have disowned God. The colors are pregnant with symbolism: the red of eternal fire, the black of evil, the sienna colors that describe the arid scenery where the coven unfolds? José Benlliure flirts with abstraction in this daring and highly evocative composition. Brother of the painter Juan Antonio and the sculptor Mariano, José Benlliure cultivated the costumbrista theme and the portrait. He began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia, and then continued his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. In 1879 he moved to Rome, where he was director of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts between 1903 and 1913. In 1897 he made a trip to Tangier, Algeria and Morocco, where he produced more luminous and free works, influenced by impressionism. From 1900 onwards, his work depicts popular themes. He was an honest and sensitive painter, and his works of popular themes, such as the one we present here, with scenes treated in a direct and spontaneous way, stand out especially. He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, obtaining third medals in the editions of 1876 and 1878 and first in that of 1887. Est: €18,000 - €20,000

JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "Francesca de Rimini", Rome, ca. 1890. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 170 x 297 cm. "Love, that if it is loved, makes you fall in love, forced me to love it in such a strong way, that as you see, it still does not leave me". These are the words of Francesca da Rimini, the protagonist of our work. Glowing like a candle in the darkness, she stretches out her arms to join the entourage of souls in love who died and were damned for love. Behind her, Minos, like a sinister monster, controls her according to her punishment. We see a man brushing the abyss, collapsing limply like a lifeless body after listening to Francesca's verses. It is Dante Alghieri. We are, therefore, before canto V of The Divine Comedy. Formerly misnamed "Fantasmagoria", this marvellous and innovative work tells one of the most powerful love stories in history. Although the setting of the story is Hell itself, the painter conveys a completely different message through Dante's work. Francesa was an Italian princess who, according to the customs of the time, was married at the age of sixteen to a much older man, Gianciotto Malatesta, known for his physical deformity and bloodthirsty character. Ten years later, she and her brother-in-law Paolo, Gianciotto's young brother, fall madly in love and are caught by him, who in a fit of rage murders them. The true story deeply shocked the society of the time and a couple of decades later, through Dante's poem, becomes an icon of tragic love. The composition of the work is masterfully resolved. Benlliure is able to create the atmosphere described in the poem, a claustrophobic darkness punctuated by the wailing and cries of tormented souls. Spots of colour splash across the canvas, merging forms and beings without the viewer being able to distinguish between them. This is a fantastic vision in which the perspective is marked by the rows of lovers who lose themselves in the background and in themselves. The condemnation of eternal torment takes on a sweet character as is the idea of being reunited forever with the loved one, even in the midst of suffering. That is why the culmination of the painting and its central axis is the resplendent, resigned face of Francesca who, after telling Dante her story, lets herself fall back into the crowd of souls, including her Paolo. José Benlliure, one of the key figures in Spanish painting at the end of the 19th century, painted this work in Rome around 1890, probably in his studio in via Marguta, 54. It was in that year and in that studio that another work on the Divine Comedy "Valley of Josaphat on the Day of Judgement (Vision)" was produced for the Universal Exhibition in Paris. It is therefore plausible that our work was the artist's first idea of the theme he wanted to present to the public. It is interesting to add that this work was transformed in 1819. The figures of Dante and Beatrice were replaced by Saint Vincent Ferrer. The present painting should be compared with the winner of the second medal, "The Vision of the Colosseum. The Last Martyr", now in the Prado Museum. The painting, although a masterpiece and the pinnacle of the artist's catalogue, was harshly criticised at the time. It was branded as incomprehensible and abstract. If we compare the two paintings, we can see that there are obvious similarities, such as the arrangement of the processions of figures in space. In the case of "Francesca" this degree of abstraction is more pronounced, appearing to be a deliberate attempt by the artist to go a step further.

The bold brushstroke, the skilful combination of precise touches and overall impressions, with which Benlliure conveys the tenderness and spontaneity of a costumbrista scene, make this painting an outstanding piece in his production. José Benlliure cultivated genre scenes and portraits. In the present case, he depicts the scene of The Soup at the Converto de Asís, giving the characters great realism and focusing not on the bourgeoisie, as was common at the time, but on the most vulnerable members of the population. José Benlliure, one of the key figures in Spanish painting at the end of the 19th century, painted this work in Rome around 1890, probably in his studio in via Marguta, 54.

        Est: €40,000 - €50,000

JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "In the Library". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 37.5 x 53.5 cm; 67 x 84 cm (frame). In the interior of an old library, full of valuable volumes bound in leather, a cardinal surrounded by an altar boy and an assistant is preparing to read a passage from The Gospels, opening the book on a lectern. A chandelier hangs from the ceiling and the floor is strewn with silver objects, a world ball and loose sheets of paper, botafumeiros and other liturgical utensils. With a virtuoso brushstroke, Benlliure extracts the right qualities and textures from each object, as well as capturing the expressions of the figures with the utmost verism and endowing the interior with an atmosphere of sublime recollection. The brother of the painter Juan Antonio and the sculptor Mariano, José Benlliure cultivated genre and portrait painting. He began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia and later continued his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. In 1879 he moved to Rome, where he was director of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts from 1903 to 1913. In 1897 he travelled to Tangiers, Algeria and Morocco, where he produced more luminous and free works with an Impressionist influence. From 1900 onwards his work depicts popular themes. He was an honest and sensitive painter, and his works on popular themes, such as the one shown here, are particularly outstanding, with scenes treated in a direct and spontaneous manner. He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, winning third medals in 1876 and 1878 and first in 1887. He belonged to the Academies of San Fernando (Madrid), San Lucas (Rome), San Carlos (Valencia), Brera (Milan) and Munich. The most important part of his production is kept in Valencia, in his Casa Museo and in the San Pío V Fine Arts Museum. He is also represented in the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Palace of Charles V in Granada, among others.

JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "Moroccan market". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 9 x 14 cm; 30 x 35 cm (frame). During the 19th and 20th centuries, the relations between Spain and Morocco were tumultuous and tense, which originated a certain proximity and knowledge about both cultures. This rapprochement led to a pictorial study within the Spanish panorama, integrating Orientalism as a subject of research in the studios and workshops of several artists. José Benlliure was attracted by the atmosphere in which the daily life of Moroccan citizens was enveloped, capturing oriental visions as in this souk. The composition has been resolved by means of a realistic and luminous technique, based on loose brushstrokes, revealing a real and reliable scene, far removed from literaturism. The brother of the painter Juan Antonio and the sculptor Mariano, José Benlliure cultivated genre and portrait painting. He began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia and later continued his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "The Gambler". Watercolour on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 95 x 60 cm; 106 x 72 cm (frame). José Benlliure showed great skill in the instantaneous, almost photographic, capture of his characters, insinuating singular temperaments, like that of this card player. The brother of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure and the painter José, Juan Antonio Benlliure began his training with the latter. He subsequently entered the San Carlos Academy in Valencia, where he furthered his studies and began to stand out as a portraitist. Like many of the artists of his time, he continued his artistic education in Rome. There he settled with his brother José, and began to paint brightly coloured canvases that would bring him renown as well as a good price for his work. In 1884 he took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid, where his painting "Por la patria! The drawing and colouring of this work already began to reveal the finesse of execution that would characterise his work in the future. Other Valencian artists also took part in this competition, and Benlliure's success spread not only among the artistic and literary circles but also among the upper echelons of society, and he began to receive numerous commissions both in Madrid and in Rome, where he had also begun to frequent the circles of high society. For a brief period he lived in the Italian town of Assisi, where he produced several watercolours depicting the history and landscape of the city. It was during these years that the death of King Alfonso XII made a great impression on him, leading him to consider painting a picture depicting the king's final moment. His friend the Marquis of Togores, Spain's ambassador in Rome, encouraged him to carry out the work, as did his brothers. Benlliure then began work on "The Last Kiss". Presented at the National Exhibition of 1887, it was not awarded a prize due to political circumstances, but it became very famous due to its subject matter and the detailed evocation of the scene. In 1904 Benlliure settled permanently in Madrid, where he achieved great prestige as a portraitist, especially for his female models. In 1929 he was awarded the silver medal at the Rome Exhibition, and in 1920 he was decorated at the National Exhibition in Madrid. He also exhibited at the Sala de Arte Suárez, where he was very well received by the public and critics. He is currently represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Valencia, the Palacio de Pedralbes in Barcelona and the museums of Jaén and Málaga, among others, as well as in numerous private collections.

Around this time, the death of King Alfonso XII made a great impression on him, leading him to consider painting a picture depicting the king's final moment.

JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "Inside a cafeteria", Tunisia. Watercolor on paper. Signed and titled in the lower left corner. Preparatory drawing for the work ""Inside a Coffee House, Tunis"" which was sold at the auction ""Important Works from the Najd Collection"", held at Sotheby's London in 2019, whose hammer price reached 646,000 €. Measurements: 36 x 44 cm; 66 x 74.5 cm (frame). Orientalist painters embarked in search of new motifs and experiences to North Africa, the Middle East and Turkey, motivated on the one hand by a genuine fascination and on the other hand by the great demand for the ""exotic"" in Europe. Spanish Orientalists such as Antonio Fabres y Costa and José Benlliure gravitated around the Spanish Academy in Rome, where, inspired by Mariano Fortuny, they produced some of their most important works. The scene is inspired by Benlliure's experience during his travels in North Africa, particularly Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. However, it appears that the composition is derived from a photograph published in 1892 in La Ilustración Española y Americana, in which he portrays a mise-en-scène of Spanish artists dressed in oriental costumes during carnival celebrations at the Circolo Artistico Internazionale in Rome. Luminous and characterized by loose brushstrokes, the watercolor transports the viewer to the hustle and bustle of a musical evening in a Tunisian café and offers a perspective of daily life in North Africa through the eyes of a Spaniard. The artist's skill in depicting the details of the clothing, as well as the brilliance of the palette, stand out. José Benlliure cultivated costumbrista themes and portraits. He began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia, to later continue his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. From an early age he enjoyed the patronage of the King of Savoy and in 1879 he moved to Rome, where he was discovered by the important art dealer Martin Colnaghi, who financed his studies in the city. In 1897 he made several trips to Tangier, Algeria and Morocco where he approached through a realistic, luminous, loose and stained painting to the daily world of the places visited. From 1900 onwards, his work depicts popular themes. He attended the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, obtaining third medals in the editions of 1876 and 1878 and first in 1887. He belonged to the Academies of San Fernando (Madrid), San Lucas (Rome), San Carlos (Valencia), Brera (Milan) and Munich. Between 1904 and 1912 he directed the Spanish Academy in Rome. The most important part of his production is preserved in Valencia, in his House Museum and in the Museum of Fine Arts San Pío V. He is also represented in the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Palace of Charles V in Granada, among others."

JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937). "The beggars, Basilica of Assisi". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 37 x 53 cm; 61 x 77 cm (frame). José Benlliure cultivated the costumbrista theme and the portrait. In the present case, we are in front of a scene in the interior of the Basilica of San Francisco de Asís. In it, some beggars appear seated on the bench of the basilica under the serious gaze of the parish priest, while praying the rosary. The scene plays with the light and the backgrounds, creating several spaces. The main part of the piece is the one that frames the beggars next to the parish priest, illuminated by a candle; while the secondary scene is played by two altar boys, at the back of the parish priest, who talk to each other. The background of this second scene is almost black. It is not arbitrary that the scene is represented in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, since he went from being the son of a rich merchant of the city in his youth, to live under the strictest poverty and observance of the Gospels. His religious life was austere and simple, so he encouraged his followers to do the same. In short, we find a piece with exceptional detail, where each face, each architecture and each detail are worked to the millimeter. José Benlliure began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia, to later continue his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. From an early age he enjoyed the patronage of the King of Savoy and in 1879 he moved to Rome, where he was discovered by the important art dealer Martin Colnaghi, who financed his studies in the city. During the 19th and 20th centuries, relations between Spain and Morocco were tumultuous and tense, which led to a certain proximity and knowledge of both cultures. This rapprochement led to a pictorial study within the Spanish panorama, integrating Orientalism as a subject of research in the studios and workshops of several artists. José Benlliure was attracted by the atmosphere in which the daily life of Moroccan citizens was enveloped, capturing oriental visions as in this orientalist scene. This close look at the daily life of Moroccan life, takes us to a moment of activity in which a group of men gathered together playing music. The composition has been resolved by means of a realistic and luminous technique, based on loose brushstrokes, revealing a real and reliable scene, far from literaturisms. He belonged to the Academies of San Fernando (Madrid), San Lucas (Rome), San Carlos (Valencia), Brera (Milan) and Munich. JOSÉ BENLLIURE GIL (Valencia, 1855 - 1937) "The witches" and fragment of "Earth!" (back). Oil on canvas. Exhibitions: José Benlliure Gil (1855 - 1937). Center del Carme, Valencia, 2008. Page 198, cat. No. 24 (reproduced). Measurements: 169 x 291 cm. The uniqueness of the work that concerns us is increased by the fact that, on the back, a fragment of the work "Tierra" is painted, one of the most important historicist paintings conceived by the Valencian artist. It was in 2008 when, during a transfer from "Las Brujas" to the monographic exhibition of José Benlliure held at the Center del Carme, curators Victoria E. Bonet and Javier García witnessed such a spectacular discovery, identifying the fragment with such a distinguished work. José Benlliure conceived "Earth!" shortly after his arrival in Rome. For this, he bought a large canvas (600 x 400 cm) and began to paint around 1879. The original painting, of which a photograph of the sketch is preserved in the Benlliure Archives, represents the moment when Columbus saw land from the ship Santa Maria. The reason why Benlliure gave up the execution of the work, despite his interest in presenting it at the National Exhibition, was due to economic issues: he had to dedicate himself to painting smaller works that, being more sought after, produced profits. more immediate. Over the years Benlliure divided the canvas, using one part to paint the picture of "The Witches." Unfortunately, the other main fragment was left in his study and is currently in the Benlliure Museum in Valencia, where it was restored in 1991.
