RAFAEL DÍAZ DE BENJUMEA, (Seville, 1825 - 1881). "Duke of Montpensier", 1860. Oil on canvas. Signed and signed on the right side. Measurements: 83 x 65 cm, 107 x 90 cm (frame). Rafael Díaz de Benjumea was a Spanish painter of history, portraits and Sevillian genre paintings. He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts until 1887. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Isabel of Hungary and received the protection of Antonio de Orleans, Duke of Montpensier, who settled in 1849 in the palace of San Telmo in Seville, where he assembled a court of literati and artists, attended by Fernán Caballero and Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, together with Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer, Eduardo Cano de la Peña and Antonio Cabral Bejarano, as Benjumea costumbrista painters. Among the works he painted under the patronage of the Duke of Montpensier are The Presentation and The Baptism of Doña María Isabel de Orleans y Borbón, the Duke and Duchess's first-born daughter, both executed in 1849. In 1850 he took part in the exhibition at the San Fernando Academy and was asked to become the second chamber painter to Isabella II. Two of the compositions executed during this period, The Presentation and Baptism of the Infanta Isabella and The Presentation and Baptism of Alfonso XII, led him to file a lawsuit in 1873 against the dethroned Queen Isabella II for non-payment of the works. Despite this, he was decorated with the title of knight of the Royal and distinguished knighthood of Charles III and that of the Holy Sepulchre and appointed Commander of the American Order of Isabella the Catholic. His time in Madrid as the second chamber painter to Isabella II included The Baptism of the Infanta Isabella and The Baptism of Alfonso XII or Prince of Asturias, as well as numerous portraits of prominent political and military figures, These include the portraits of Adelardo López de Ayala as Minister of Overseas France and General Gutiérrez de la Concha, both in the Prado Museum, those of Manuel Alonso Martínez and Joaquín López Puigcerver in the Ministry of Finance, and that of Manuel Seijas Lozano in the Council of State. Rafael Benjumea, Courting at a Doughnut Stall at the Seville Fair, 1852, Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga Of the works exhibited at the National Exhibitions between 1856 and 1864, mention should be made of Three Gypsy Boys Playing Cards, which he later gave away for a raffle initiated for the purpose of erecting a monument in Seville in honour of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and The Corpse of an Officer Killed in the African War, defended from various birds of prey by his dog. In 1887 three oil paintings, The Eve of the Day, Portrait D.N.D.B. and The Front of the Baptistery of Seville Cathedral and Procession of the Holy Cross, and the watercolour A pillo, pillo y medio, a genre scene, were sent for exhibition at the National Exhibition of the same year. In the line of Andalusian genre painting, we should mention, for example, Dancing in an Inn (1850), Courtship at a Doughnut Stall at the Seville Fair (1852) and On the Outskirts of Seville, all of which are in the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga.
