It is thanks to our heavy artillery, that our popular 75 is too often forgotten, that we obtain these fine results. It renders immense services in this war, a veritable siege war. To the large German guns, of which our enemies are so proud, our 115, 120, 155 long and short guns now respond effectively. Our artillery has clearly taken advantage over that of the enemy. War Poster WWI La Grande Guerre French Army Benito

        Est: £30 - £60

Original vintage WWI propaganda poster: La Grande Guerre - En Avant!! (Text translates as: The Great War - Advance!). Woodcut print with hand colouring through stencils by Eduardo Garcia Benito (1891-1981) featuring a group of soliders standing in the trenches looking out for the enemy. This print takes as its subject the conflict in the Bois de la Grurie, in the forest of Argonne (France's Champagne region). Fierce fighting took place in this area as the German army tried to reach Verdun. Both sides dug trenches into the ground, which was dense with trees. French authorities were keen to encourage the French public to believe that there were legitimate grounds to hope for victory, but without the slightest suggestion that victory might be imminent. The image does not convey the horror of trench warfare, where mud-soaked soldiers lived in waterlogged dug-outs, without access to latrines and with no opportunity to dry their clothing. The wet also brought additional dangers: infections, infestations equipment failure and the collapse of trench walls. Print no. 35 from the 2nd series La Grande Guerre. Published by Tolmer & Co. Eduardo Benito was a Spanish fashion illustrator and painter, noted for his Vogue covers of the 1920s and 1930s. He studied at the Mignon studio, and later trained under Daniel Vierge. In 1912 he moved to Paris, he later spent 15 years painting Vogue covers. Among Benito's subjects as a portrait painter were Alfonso XIII of Spain, Paul Poiret, and the Chinese Royal family. Also in 1912, he won a scholarship to study at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Good condition, small tears in top margin, folds, foxing and staining in margins. Country of issue: France, designer: Eduardo Garcia Benito, size (cm): 32.5x39.5 (Horizontal), year of printing: 1915.

Original vintage WWI propaganda poster: La Grande Guerre - Les Anglais à La Bassée… L'Heroisme de nos Allies (Text translates as: The Great War - The English at La Bassée - The heroism of our Allies). Woodcut print with hand colouring through stencils by Eduardo Garcia Benito (1891-1981) featuring a view of the English soldiers on the battlefield at La Basse-Givenchy, fighting against the Germans. The town of La Bassée, about 25km west of Lille, had been taken by Germany back in October. Control of nearby Givenchy was regained from Germany by the British at the end of December, at a cost of 6,000 lives (4,000 from the British side). Germany renewed counter efforts in January. On 25 January the Germans began to shell Béthune and pressed forward. Fighting lasted several days but La Bassée remained in Germany's possession. The town of Givenchy-lès-la-Bassée was completely destroyed in the fighting. There is a memorial in the village for the 55th (West Lancashire) Infantry Division, commemorating their courage. Print no. 44 from the 2nd series La Grande Guerre. Published by Tolmer & Co. Eduardo Benito was a Spanish fashion illustrator and painter, noted for his Vogue covers of the 1920s and 1930s. Eduardo García Benito (Valladolid, 1881 - 1981)

Eduardo García Benito (Valladolid, 1881 - 1981) "Pareja elegante, nocturno" (Elegant couple by night) Watercolour y gouache on paper. Signed. Circa 1920 - 25. 25,8 x 52,3 cm. The painter Eduardo García Benito (1891-1981) was one of the most renowned and polished artists of the Art Deco movement. Born in Valladolid, he trained at its School of Fine Arts and Crafts and, later, at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He was given a grant by the City Council of Valladolid to go to Paris in 1912, a city where he socialised with the great masters of the time (Pablo Gargallo, Julio González, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Raoul Dufy and Amedeo Modigliani). His knowledge of the various avant-garde movements that were being developed at the time (Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism) led him to develop an eclectic style to which he added personal elements. The interwar period, the Roaring Twenties, was the period in which he reached the peak of his career, largely due to his discovery by the famous French couturier Paul Poiret (1879-1944) -whom he painted together with his wife in 1921- who attracted the best stylistic illutrators of the time to his company. Poiret, who had introduced revolutionary changes in women's clothing to suit the needs of the moment, took him under his wing and introduced him to the sophisticated and elegant world of the international fashion publications and magazines of Paris and New York: "Fémina" and the "Gazette du Bon Ton" in Paris and "Vanity Fair" and "Vogue" in New York. When Condè Nast (1873-1942) took over the Gazette du Bon Ton, he hired a number of illustrators, among whom was Benito -which is how our artist liked to sign his work- whom Nast himself came to describe as the most talented of all. Nast also owned Vanity Fair and Vogue, undoubtedly the most influential fashion publications, and required reading for the elite for almost a century, for which Benito made more than 100 covers between 1921-1940, in addition to exquisite illustrations and figurines. For "Vogue" he created striking covers in which he impressively combined geometry with colour contrasts. His style was defined by 1925. From that time his illustrations for these magazines stood out for the perfection of the drawing and their straight lines, the balance of proportions and the harmony of the whole. His characters are austere, stylized, geometric and elegant, with a crystalline structure and sculptural and cubist faces, all characteristics that contributed decisively to the forming and dissemination of Art Deco. In the clothing of the moment there was a trend towards internal freedom and comfort, and that is precisely what we can observe in Benito's drawings and sketches: light images capturing woman in the process of liberation -the old corsets and whale sashes were discarded- which created that languid and stylized image that fitted perfectly with the atmosphere of sophistication and frivolity of the time. The article dedicated to Benito by the writer Francisco de Cossío in the newspaper El Norte de Castilla in its issue of August 30, 1929 on the contribution of Benito to the world of fashion of the twenties is very significant. It reads: "To what extent is fashion a superficial art? García Benito finds the greatest inspiration for his creations in the grace of the elegant woman. Being, in a way, an auxiliary to the great couturiers, he knows how to raise the standard of his art by conquering the covers of the most elegant magazines in the world. The modern mannequin, stylized, shiny gold and silver, which brings us the memory of oriental idols, is his work. Creating for women, not only fabrics and colours, but attitudes, smiles, postures, rhythms … Elegant women come to García Benito's drawings to learn the secret of suggestion in modern elegance… ". From 1923 he lived alternately in Paris and New York, and in 1958 he returned to his hometown, bringing his most original artistic cycle to a close, although he continued to paint and work. The fact that the Congress of the United States, in the session of February 8, 1974, voted a motion of congratulations to Benito for his cultural work in that country is another proof of the level of importance that our artist attained. We would like to thank Javier Baladrón, doctor in History of Art, for cataloguing this piece.

ARTIST: EDUARDO GARCIA BENITO (1891-1981) SIZE: 35 1/2 x 50 5/8 in./90.2 x 128.5 cm PRINTER: A. Trüb, Aarau DESCRIPTION: This image is from the high point of the ‘20s, just before “The Crash”—perhaps the rain beginning to cascade from the sky is the artist’s premonition. At any rate, it reminds us of bad weather ahead and the need for Candée snow boots. Unlike in olden days—only a decade before—when a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking, the boots now complimented a more modern wardrobe. And they do, thanks to the great fashion illustrator Benito. His cool background colors make certain that the red boots stand out, and his high 1920s style evokes a glamorous New Yorker as she hustles down the street. This is the German-language version. Est: £90 - £180

Original vintage WWI propaganda poster: La Grande Guerre - La prise de Przemysl (Text translates as: The Great War - The capture of Przemysl). Woodcut print with hand colouring through stencils by Eduardo Garcia Benito (1891-1981) featuring Russian soldiers walking in the snow. Przemysl was a fortified town on the Austro-Hungarian border with Russia (in present day Poland, 125 miles east of Kraków). The siege was the longest of the war, beginning on 24 September and ending on 22 March 1915 (with a brief cessation in October). It was a major defeat for Austria-Hungary. The text on the print expressed the view of many, that the fall of the garrison would give Russia access into Hungary. Print no. 53bis from the 2nd series La Grande Guerre. Very good condition, fold in top left corner, small tears, foxing and staining in margins. PROPAGANDA POSTER WWI LA GRANDE GUERRE FRENCH ARMY BENITO

        Est: £60 - £120

Original vintage WWI propaganda poster: La Grande Guerre - La Guerre en Montagne - Une Rencontre entre Skieurs (Text translates as: The Great War - War in the mountains - A meeting between skiers). Woodcut print with hand colouring through stencils by Eduardo Garcia Benito (1891-1981) featuring a group of Chasseurs Alpins, or Alpine troops, chasing Germans soldiers in the Vosges department, through snowy slopes with pine forests and mountains ranges depicted in the distance. The elite mountain troops were trained to operate in mountainous terrain. They were given the nicknamed Les Diables bleus ('blue devils') because of their uniform, which at the time was more modest than the regular French army. They wore a large black beret, known as la tarte, a short jacket and puttees (like gaiters, but wrapped spirally up the leg from ankle to knee, also worn by the BEF or British Expeditionary Force).
