Barton Lidicé Beneš was a sculptor and visual artist who worked in materials that he described as artifacts from everyday life. He became well-known for his collection and installations of relics ranging from cremation ashes to shredded money to bodily fluids to found objects to celebrity ephemera. Calling these reliquaries "Museums," Beneš' own apartment also became a larger-scale installation of its own, holding memento mori. A veteran of the AIDS crisis, Beneš' work blended activism, poetry, and resistance, forcing a confrontation with death and fears of transmission. His most controversial work was titled Lethal Weapons and featured objects such as a toy gun, darks, and other found objects filled with his own blood.

          Glass-tube filled with the artist’s HIV positive blood, surrounded by firecrackers. Mounted on paper, framed 40.5 x 30.5 cm. Titled and signed in pencil by the artist. The glass-tube is loose from the sheet it was originally mounted on. Original work from New York artist Beneš (1942–2012), first-generation veteran of the AIDS crisis who chronicled his own HIV+ status in 'Lethal Weapons', a series of works created with his own blood. The 'Lethal Weapons' exhibition toured Europe in the 1990s and traveled to Lund, Sweden, where authorities intervened and demeaned installation be heated to 70 degrees Celsius in a hospital oven to make it 'safe' for public viewing.

          Barton Lidice Benes (1942 - 2012) Butterfly Mixed Media on Paper. This piece features a U.S. dollar bill cut into the shape of a butterfly with a metal wire attached. Artist signed and dated 1981. Barton Lidice Benes, a New York sculptor who worked in materials that he called artifacts of everyday life, expanded his definition of "everyday" as he went. He used the everyday mementos of childhood in his early work, and later made sculptures from chopped up, everyday American cash (purchased pre-shredded from the Federal Reserve). Mr. Benes, who died of complications of AIDS on May 30 at 69, created a body of work that was exhibited internationally and included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian.
