      G. BENELLI (Italian, 19/20th century) PORTRAIT OF BENVENUTE CELLINI oil on board; incised G. Benelli, l.r.; inscribed in pencil on verso Benvenute Cellini Ciselfortere e Tonditore in Bronzo - Ignato Dipinse - G. Benelli unframed: 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches Other Notes: This painting is after 16th century painter Giorgio Vassari's portrait of Cellini. Benvenute Cellini (1500-1571) was a Florentine sculptor and an important figure in the Mannerist movement. Cellini's tumultuous life, described in his autobiography has been the inspiration for several novels, operas and poetry. Possible attribution for this work is Giacomo Benelli, a 19/20th century Italian artist known to have painted small oval copies of paintings in Florence museums.
