    • M. BENEDETTI (*1745), The Child's Dressing, 1801, Stipple engraving
      Nov. 16, 2024

      M. BENEDETTI (*1745), The Child's Dressing, 1801, Stipple engraving

      Est: €1,200 - €1,600

Michele Benedetti (1745 Viterbo - 1810 Vienna): The Child's Dressing, 1801, Stipple engraving Technique: Stipple engraving on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "H.Singleton pinxt. / M.Benedetti sculpt.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "The Child's Dressing / Vienna Pub. d. i.t Decem. 1801. by Mr. Benedetti.". Date: 1801 Description: Henry Singleton, who worked on great Bible compositions, dramatic Shakespeare scenes or significant historical depictions, has devoted himself to a private, domestic theme in this work. With this print we are allowed to witness an intimate scene of bourgeois family happiness. A mother sits with her three children in an interior before a large draped curtain. Together they form a harmonious unit. In the background, a maid prepares the youngest's fresh dressing room and looks lovingly at the group of children. Now the youngest is to be dressed on his mother's lap. The worn clothes and shoes are already lying on and under the stool. But the little one is distracted by his own face. Devoutly, the big brother holds a mirror up to him. Mother and daughter, whom Singleton portrays as if they were springing from a figure, gaze with gentle expressions at their closest. Perhaps the little one recognised himself in the mirror for the first time at this moment. In the mother's secure womb, one's own self is now ready to awaken. Henry Singleton came from a family of artists and was a pupil at the Royal Academy. He began a professional career as a portraitist at an early age. He presented up to 300 works in the exhibitions of the Royal Academy. British statesmen and scholars such as Lord Nelson, Admiral Vernon or James Boswell stood in his portrait. Like this dot engraving, many of his works found wide circulation in the form of etching. Keywords: Child, Dress, Woman, Mother, Enterieur, Lady, Genre, Family, Print, Mirror, Boy, Girl, Draught, Fireplace, Drapery, Curtain, 19th century, Classicism, Fashion, United Kingdom, Size: Paper: 55,6 cm x 43,0 cm (21,9 x 16,9 in), Plate: 52,5 cm x 39,2 cm (20,7 x 15,4 in), Depiction: 44,5 cm x 35,5 cm (17,5 x 14 in)
