During the struggles of World War ll, many relief organizations formed in the United States to help bolster the relief effort in some of the invaded countries of Europe. Most of these groups were strongly supported by Americans of origin in those countries. In this Polish War Relief Poster we are drawn to the sadness of the Mother clutching her baby and holding her other child. The feeling of need and despair is so well conveyed by the artist. Wladyslaw Theodor Benda (1873-1948) was a Polish born, naturalized American artist . He was best known as the originator of Benda masks (used on stages internationally) and as an illustrator with a flair for the exotic. He illustrated many books and magazines, including Century, Scribner's, Cosmopolitan, and Vanity Fair. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Artist: WLADYSLAW TEODOR (W. T.) BENDA (1873-1948) Size: 30 x 43 7/8 in./76.2 x 111.5 cm In his time, W. T. Benda was as well known as Norman Rockwell, N. C. Wyeth or Maxfield Parrish, and for good reason: his portraiture is immediately compelling, as this example makes clear. An immigrant from Poland to New York City in 1899, he became closely associated with the Kosciuszko Foundation, and after World War I was honored with the "Polonia Restituta" distinction by the Polish government for his war relief posters like this one. WLADYSLAW BENDA New York/New Jersey/Poland, 1873-1948 General Tadeusz Kosciuszko. Signed lower left "W. Benda". Likely the original artwork for a Polish WWII recruitment poster. General Tadeusz Kosciuszko was a gifted general and military strategist. He moved to America in 1776 and became a colonel in the Continental Army, overseeing the installation of numerous fortifications including those at West Point. The Continental Congress promoted him to brigadier general in 1783 in recognition of his services. He returned to his native Poland to fight for its independence before eventually returning to America to advocate for the freedom of the slaves. His will instructed that all his American assets be sold to benefit the freedom and education of the slaves. Mixed media on board, 23" x 23" sight. Framed 37" x 28".

WLADISLAW THEODOR BENDA (POLISH-AMERICAN 1873-1948) The Lovers, watercolor on paper 60 x 39 cm (23 5/8 x 15 3/8 in.) signed lower right LOT NOTES Considered to be an important American illustration artist, Wladyslaw Teodor Benda was born in Poznan, Poland, in 1873, and emigrated to America with his family in 1899. In New York, he studied at the the Art Students League and the William Merritt Chase School, studying with Robert Henri and Edward Penfield. A very successful graphic artist in America, Benda was also extremely proud of his Polish heritage, become closely associated with the Kosciuszko Foundation in America for Polish-American affairs. During both World Wars, Benda designed numerous posters for both Poland and America, many advocating relief efforts. Following the end of World War I, the Polish government honored him with the Order Odrodzenia Polski (Order of Rebirth of Poland).

Benda was a Polish immigrant that studied with Robert Henri and William Merrit Chase at the Art Students League of New York. He was also a member of the Society of Illustrators.
