1935 | technique: fired clay | 23.5 cm | signature: marked B. BENDA 1935 Lot description This intimate sculpture by the prominent Czech sculptor Bretislav Benda depicts a female figure in a private toilet moment. The work is characterized by Benda's typical rendering of female beauty, which he captures with an emphasis on delicacy and elegance of form. The use of fired clay enhances the naturalness and warmth of the material, which underlines the intimate nature of the scene. Benda, known for his ability to capture the harmony of the human body, here again shows himself as a master of figurative sculpture. The toilet is an example of his sculptural mastery from the interwar period, when he concentrated on simplified but impressive forms.

"I know of no motive more precious than the human body, and especially the female body." These words of the eminent Czech sculptor Břetislav Benda capture the central theme and tone of his artistic expression, which completes the neo-classical current in 20th century Czech sculpture. "Jiří Kotalík writes, "Andromeda (1941), deliberately historicizing in theme, composition, and resulting form, claims to be inspired by the family-Sturz inspiration; the ancient myth of Perseus suggests a belief in liberation from the shackles of occupation." Břetislav Benda has accentuated this motif by delicately crafting it in clear, luminous Carrara marble. The author of the sculpture graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and was a pupil of J. V. Myslbek and Jan Stursa. During his lifetime, he created an extensive body of work of more than one hundred life-size and larger-than-life sculptures, and the main theme Benda focused on was the female figure, especially in the form of the nude. The work Andromeda comes from the artist's estate and is accompanied by a certificate of provenance signed by the artist's grandchildren. Published: Kotalík J.: Břetislav Benda, Prague, 1982. BŘETISLAV BENDA 1897 - 1983 - THINKING

        Est: -

Benda's period between 1919 and 1930 is associated with the absorption of currents from his two teachers, Josef Václav Myslbek and Jan Stursa. The focus of his interest shifts to frequent variations of female nudes with a touch of lyricism. Benda himself adds: "I do not know a more beautiful motif than the woman in all her variations; she is an inexhaustible subject for a sculptor. With my sculptures I want to express the infinite beauty of the human body, but also other feelings." Jiří Kotalík writes the following about the offered sculpture, which he has placed on the cover of a publication about Břetislav Benda: A perfect combination of both creative principles of lyrical and epic vision became the sculpture Přemýšlející, which, together with Toaleta III, is one of the most important creative achievements of Czech sculpture of this period. The motif of the seated girl's nude is expressed in a balanced and closed composition, which juxtaposes the young body of solid forms in a distinctive gesture of meditation with the forms of Thonet's bentwood chair; the result is a sculpturally perfect treatise on the relationship between man and thing. One unwittingly anticipates something of the struggle for the renewal of figuration in sculpture as waged by Giacomo Manzú in Italian modern sculpture after the Second World War. The sculpture comes from Benda's estate, and the work is accompanied by a certificate from the artist's heirs. It is a version with a splint. Exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1925 and at the Venice Art Exhibition in 1926. Published: Kotalík Jiří. Břetislav Benda, Prague, 1982. p. 35. Czech World, issue 1, volume XXIII, 1926. The motif of a girl in a decent female nude expresses the very essence of fragility. It is an act so fleeting and full of tension that he could not go unanswered in art. From the position of an artist, the depiction of such an act represents the revelation of the veil of secrecy of female beauty and the entry into the intimate taboo zone. Břetislav Benda accentuated this impression with a delicate carving in Carrara marble. The author of the sculpture Břetislav Benda graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and was a pupil of J. V. Myslbek and Jan Štursa. 1923 58 cm (h) Bronze, authentic cast. Marked on lower right on plinth: "Benda B." From the certificate of origin: "During his lifetime, Břetislav Benda was called 'the female body sculptor' by his contemporaries – sculptor colleagues and art experts. This moniker was apt, as female figures comprise the core of his extensive oeuvre of over one hundred life-size and larger-than-life statues, dozens of portraits, and several hundred smaller sculptures. Jiří Kotalík described the statue of Demeter, the Greek goddess of plenty, as 'aiming towards an idealistically-toned allegory in a frontal, static pose, holding an ear of grain in her left hand.' The statue has been exhibited many times and was awarded a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925. A photograph of the statue was published in domestic and international media." Ref.: Author's archive. Jiří Kotalík, Břetislav Benda, Odeon, 1982, p. 86. Benda Bretislav (Líšnice 1897 - 1983 Prague) Girl Entering Water, bronze, with dark patina, signed Bret. Benda, 1930, caster's mark K. Barták, height 88 cm (Zí) Lit.: Kotalík J., Bretislav Benda, Odeon, 1982, fig. 15 - slightly different version Bretislav Benda, exhibition catalogue, Prague, 1977, other, slightly different version Bretislav Benda's work from the end of the 1920s focused on the depiction of the female body. The author made many civilian sculptures of nude young girls, in which he departs from the established composition scheme and applies new formal solutions. In terms of themes, he was attracted by the motif of bathing, which allowed him to depict the female body in everyday, but charming situations. The sculpture on offer, "Girl Entering Water", captures a moment when a girl has just put her clothes aside with her right hand, is wiping sweat off her forehead with the back of the left hand, and entering water with the left foot. The author designed the sculpture in several sizes, which differ slightly in the design of the stone on which she is setting down the textile drapery. A larger, 188 cm tall bronze version is in the collection of the Gallery of the City of Prague. Nude girls from this era represent the peak of Benda's work. Contributing to the exceptional nature of the bronze are the very high quality of the cast and the patina from the casting workshop of Karel Barák.
