          Silverplate on white metal cocktail shaker belonging to preeminent American humorist and actor Robert Benchley (1889-1945), inscribed "To Robert C. Benchley from the Boys and Girls of his Bible Class July 24 - 1926 'Our Teacher'". From the estate of a central menber of the Algonquin Round Table (1919-1929) a daily lunch gathering of writers, painters, actors and wits. 13.25" x 7" Flaked plating and missing stopper.

          Shirley Temple, Robert Benchley (1889-1945) and Fay Holden (1893-1973) Actors. Benchley was a humorist best known for his work as a newspaper columnist His style of humor brought him respect and success during his life, from New York City and his peers at the Algonquin Round Table to contemporaries in the burgeoning film industry. Holden was a British actress, remembered for her role as Emily Hardy, Mickey Rooney's mother in the MGM Andy Hardy movie series. 5 ½” x 4 ¼” album page imprinted, “Write A Letter Home” signed by all three, Temple’s signature an adolescent example and Holden adds: “Ella Hardy”.

          1. Document Signed ("Robert Benchley"), 2 pp recto and verso, 4to, Los Angeles, August 18, 1938, on M.G.M. letterhead, assigning rights to the short film, "How to Raise a Baby," minor toning, two holes punched at upper margin. A successful magazine writer, Benchley enjoyed a second career as a comedian starring in a series of short "How To" films for M.G.M., including How to Sleep, How to Behave, and the work mentioned here. 2. Typed Letter Signed ("Bob B"), 1 p, 8vo, n.p., July 13, 1937, to George Cukor, on personal stationery, staining at upper and lower left margin. Benchley forwards his share of the tip from a recent cruise: "Myron, Eddie and I were held in quarantine aboard until mid-afternoon, thereby swelling the gross largess by about ten dollars an hour, as we kept feeling more and more generous as the day wore on."
