BENCAB Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1942 -

Contemporary artist Benedicto R. Cabrera was born in Manila in 1942 and is considered one of the Philippines' most prolific artists. He later created the alias BenCab to separate him from other artists with the Cabrera name. BenCab's paintings were primarily oil and acrylic pieces that depicted women; he also created an iconic Filipino imaginary figure named Sabel. This character was a symbol for the suffering of the destitute populations of the Philippines, and BenCab's artworks often reflected his humanitarian concerns for his country.

As an illustrator for The Sunday Times Magazine in 1965, BenCab's prints were brought into mainstream culture. Being Filipino, a book of images of Philippine society, published in 1981, contains 13 of BenCab's prints. He was recognized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1992, receiving their Award for Arts. Browse other expressive portrait prints for sale online at Invaluable to bring into your home.

BenCab (b. 1942) Signed and dated '2008' (lower right) Acrylic on canvas 152 x 91 cm (60 x 36 in) National Artist Benedicto Cabrera, widely known as BenCab, stands as a significant figure in contemporary Philippine art, admired for his impactful and expressive creations. Among his most iconic works is the 'Sabel' series, a dynamic and evolving body of art that has become central to his artistic identity. Introduced in the mid-1960s, the figure of Sabel has undergone a remarkable transformation over the decades, serving as a canvas for BenCab's explorations into beauty, aesthetics, and the complexities of human experience. Initially, Sabel appeared in stark black-and-white inked forms, reflecting the harsh realities of societal issues and the struggles of marginalized individuals. These early depictions offered a raw commentary on urban poverty and social marginalization. As the series progressed, Sabel evolved into a more fluid and vibrant figure, engaging in intricate studies of fabric, shape, and color. Each transformation of Sabel represents a different facet of beauty, challenging conventional ideas and expanding the conversation on aesthetic values. In her more recent portrayals, Sabel is draped in layers of rich, textured fabric, often accented with vivid reds that add depth and emotion to her character. This iteration of Sabel exudes a distinct feminine allure, characterized by expressive eyes and lively, dynamic movement. Her updated form reflects BenCab's ongoing exploration of beauty, not just as a visual experience but as a complex and multifaceted concept. Through the evolving images of Sabel, BenCab invites viewers to deeply engage with the changing nature of beauty. Each version of Sabel offers a new perspective, enriching the discourse on aesthetics and the human condition. BenCab's skillful manipulation of form, color, and texture ensures that Sabel remains a symbol of artistic innovation and a meaningful commentary on society.

          BenCab (b. 1942) - Sabel

          Est: ₱4,000,000 - ₱6,000,000

BenCab (b. 1942) Signed and dated '2000' (lower right) Acrylic on canvas 61 x 45.2 cm (24 x 18 in) BenCab's beloved 'Sabel' series highlights the ongoing evolution of this iconic figure. National Artist BenCab initially saw Sabel as a symbol of dislocation and solitude, inspired by her presence in the streets of Tondo, scavenging in makeshift attire. This poignant vision deeply influenced his work. As Sabel's image has evolved through BenCab's changing styles--from social realism to figurative expressionism and minimalism--each version invites viewers to explore new facets of beauty. BenCab's mastery in form, color, and texture ensures that Sabel remains a profound symbol of artistic innovation and a thoughtful commentary on the human condition.

          BenCab (b. 1942) - The Door

          Est: ₱2,000,000 - ₱2,400,000

BenCab (b. 1942) Signed and dated '1970' (lower middle) Ink and acrylic on paper 59.5 x 56 cm (23 1/4 x 22 in) Literature: Krip Yuson & Cid Reyes, BenCab, Mantes Publishing, Inc., 2002, p. 91 Provenance: Glenda Jackson Collection, London The captivating journey of National Artist Benedicto 'BenCab' Cabrera's early masterpieces into the collection of acclaimed British actress Glenda Jackson is a compelling tale of art, fame, and cultural transformation. Jackson, renowned for her remarkable achievements--two Oscars, two Emmys, and a Tony, collectively known as the 'Triple Crown of Acting'--was also a significant political figure in Britain. This story, which began fifty years ago, reveals a fascinating convergence of artistry and celebrity. In 1969, amidst the revolutionary spirit of 'Swinging London'--a period celebrated for its creative freedom and iconic trends such as The Beatles and psychedelic fashion--BenCab and his new wife, Caroline Kennedy, embarked on a transformative chapter. Kennedy had set up an antique stall at a Chelsea flea market, where BenCab immersed himself in drawing. His artistic career took a pivotal turn when he began exhibiting his work at a gallery on King's Road, marking the onset of his formal art career in this vibrant city. Kennedy's connections played a crucial role in introducing BenCab's work to influential circles - a neighbor was a friend of Glenda Jackson, who had recently garnered acclaim for her role in 'Women in Love.' Enchanted by BenCab's artworks, Jackson purchased several pieces from his debut solo exhibition at The Room Gallery in Greenwich, managed by Jackson's husband, Roy Hodges. This exhibition not only marked BenCab's rise to prominence but also attracted other luminaries, including Paul McCartney, who acquired his work during The Beatles' 1966 Manila tour, alongside notable figures like Harold Pinter and John Schlesinger. During his London sojourn, BenCab was on the verge of introducing his acclaimed 'Larawan' series while exploring various artistic forms. The piece currently offered is a notable work from this period. 'The Door' resonates with BenCab's 1970 piece, 'Subway Madonna,' reflecting his deep respect for the human figure. Critics Kris Yuson and Cid Reyes have highlighted how 'The Door' features a swiftly sketched figure set against a grid of brown and yellow rectangles, capturing a complex spatial dynamic. The interplay of figurative and abstract elements imparts the piece with unique tension and depth. Reference: Krip Yuson & Cid Reyes, BenCab, Mantes Publishing, Inc., 2002
