Bemmel 1653 Olio su tela, cm 97X85 Provenienza: Londra, Sotheby's, 15 aprile 1999, lotto 277 (come Willem van Bemmel) Bibliografia: https://rkd.nl/explore/images/57260 (come Jacob Gerritsz Van Bemmel) Il dipinto era assegnato a Willem van Bemmel e successivamente ricondotto al catalogo del fratello maggiore Jacob Gerritsz Van Bemmel come indicato dal RKD. L'opera descrive un paesaggio italianizzante con rovine romane sullo sfondo, infatti, l'edificio che si intravede evoca quello di Minerva Medica sito all'Esquilino, una costruzione a pianta decagonale, ma che in realtà era il ninfeo degli 'Horti Liciniani', la grande residenza con giardini appartenuta all'imperatore Gallieno nel III secolo d.C. Il ponte invece è il Salario sull'Aniene che di origini etrusche è storicamente celebre per l'episodio del Ratto delle Sabine che li transitarono. L'opera è quindi una squisita descrizione della campagna romana con rovine e coniuga l'interesse archeologico con il gusto pastorale tipico dell'epoca. Per quanto riguarda le notizie biografiche sull'artista sono scarne e non abbiamo indicazioni su un suo viaggio in Italia.
