Ludwig Bemelmans Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, Caricaturist, b. 1898 - d. 1962

(b 1898; d 1962) Born in Austria, Ludwig Bemelmans moved to the United States in 1914 and enlisted in the army during the First World War. After the War, he worked in the hotel business before turning to a career as an author, illustrator and artist. He wrote and illustrated his best known work, the children’s book Madeline, in 1939, as well as fourteen other books over his career. Bemelmans considered himself an artist and illustrator first and his work includes many cover illustrations for the New Yorker, the design of a Broadway set, and famous murals in New York’s Carlyle Hotel. He became a serious painter towards the end of his life and a few of his works are on display in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Museé National d'Art of Paris.

LUDWIG BEMELMANS "Still Life with Wine, Cheese, and Fruit" Illustration created for the Office of War Information. Gouache on board, c. 1942. 762x508 mm; 30x20 inches. Unsigned. A rare work that has never been to auction or on exhibit, "Still Life with Wine, Cheese, and Fruit" was created by Bemelmans for the Office of War Information (OWI). Established in June 1942, the OWI was responsible for developing programs to inform the public and promote war efforts. The informational works were designed to encourage the Allies to keep fighting, support unliberated countries to maintain their struggle, and weaken the will of the Axis powers. Bemelmans was recruited to the project by Toby Moss, chief of the Graphic Art Section for the Bureau of Overseas Publications. Moss had previously spent five years at Time Incorporated where, as an art director, he helped design the now iconic LIFE Magazine logo. From 1941 through 1945, he assembled a stellar staff of graphic designers, layout artists, and typographers. He was also tasked to supplement the talent on his team with outside illustrators including Bemelmans, who had already achieved notoriety with the initial U.S. publication of Madeline in 1939. The two men collaborated and became friends in the process. Under Moss' leadership, the Graphics Division produced tens of thousands of pieces of printed propaganda in almost two dozen languages.

LUDWIG BEMELMANS "The magician, as he took his pill . . . " from Madeline's Christmas. Illustration published on pages 18-19 of the original special insert in the Christmas edition of McCall's magazine, 1956. Madeline's Christmas was later published as a hardcover bound edition in 1985 (New York: Viking Kestrel) with a different version of this illustration. Casein on board. 508x622 mm; 20x24 1/2 inches. Signed "Bemelmans" in lower right. Professionally restored. The "Madeline and the Magician" image from Madeline's Christmas depicts the moment after which Madeline thaws the frozen merchant/magician. He, in turn, asks what he can do for her. The full caption reads: "The magician, as he took his pill, said 'Ask me, Madeline, what you will.' Said she, 'I've cooked a dinner nutritious. Will you please help me with the dishes?'" The 1956 version includes a green lamp hanging from the ceiling which does not appear in the 1985 publication. A copy of the insert is included.
