      Arthur Beckingham (British, 1855-1920) The Parklands, Houghton unsigned, annotated verso watercolour h:21 w:32 cm Other Notes: Arthur Beckingham exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a London painter of the English countryside, genre, historical and romantic subjects. He lived at 'Thicket Lodge' Houghton 1912. Kelly's directory 1920. Born in London in 1855 and died in Houghton 1920. Beckingham's meternal grandfather was Alexander Fraser, senior (1786-1865) ARSA 1840, and his unlce was Alexander Fraser, junoir, (1828-99) ASRA 1858, RSA 1862, RSW 1878. Fraser, senoir was an associate of Sir David Wilkie RA (1785-1841) in London. Fraser, junior, was a landscape painter of the plein-air school, and worked in East anglia as well as Scotland, Wales and Surrey. Beckingham studied at The Slade school in London and in Paris, and for many years was associated with Marcus Stone RA ( 1840-1921) painting the details and backgrounds of many of his pictures. Stone is, perhaps, best known for his asociation with the novelist Charles Dickens for whom he illustrated Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend but he was also an accomplished painte. It is said that he inspired artists such as Walter Dendy Sadler (1854-1923) Beckingham painted romatic, historical scenes and cotsume pieces in the manner of Stone and landscapes including a number from around Cley in Norfolk and, between 1910 and 1920, of Huntingdonshire. In 1911, at the age of 56, he married Alice Shingles. Alice's half-sister Sarah Ann and her husband james Fra(z)er had brough The Elms, previously owned by George Brown (Charles Whymper's father-in-law) in thicket Road, Houghton. They paid for the biulding of Thicket Lodge, on a site also in Thicket Road, Houghton as a wedding present for Alice and Arthur. Alice and Arthur had one child, Charles Frazer Beckingham (1914-1998) who became an Islamic scholar and Professor of Islamic Studies at London University. Exibited 'The Old Bridge, St Ives' at RA 1889.
