      P. BECKER (1828-1904), Small chapel at the edge of the forest, Watercolor

      Est: €900 - €1,200

Peter Becker (1828 Frankfurt on the Main - 1904 Soest): Path to a small chapel on the edge of the hill with tall spruce trees, 19th century, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor and Pencil on Paper Inscription: lower left signed: "P. Becker". Date: 19th century Description: Peter Becker's diligence as a painter of vedute was already legendary among his contemporaries. It was not without reason that Franz Rittweger gave his book about him, published in 1895, the title "The Merian of the 19th Century". Becker travelled through the Rhine-Main region, Westphalia and Central Germany and created countless sketches and watercolours. It was above all his cityscapes that made him famous. His talent for harmonious colour combinations and his flair for atmospheric depictions of nature were particularly evident in the landscapes he created during his travels. A narrow path leads to a small chapel on the edge of the hill. It is surrounded by tall spruce trees and partly sinks into deep shadow. The sky is criss-crossed by a luminous play of shadows cast by the setting sun. The world - filled with an atmosphere of silence and tranquillity - hides spiritual experiences. A lonely chapel is a place where the presence of God can be felt, and where a conflicted person or viewer alike can hope to find solace. With his drawing, Becker creates a place to linger and invites contemplation. Keywords: Chapel, Landscape, Romanticism, Valley, Architecture, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 10,3 cm x 13,6 cm (4,1 x 5,4 in)
