One of the few Swedish women of her generation able to support herself through her art, Julia Beck received critical acclaim for the subject she made her own—her ethereal atmospheric landscapes such as the present work painted in Normandy in 1911. Early in her career, Beck realized that pursuing an art career was going to demand sacrifice. For one, she realized from seeing the lives of her female artist-friends that if she married and had a family, her artistic career would suffer. So, she remained single. She also recognized that Paris, not her native Sweden, held her destiny. The French capital was the leading art center, offered the best education for a painter, and had the most vigorous art market, so Beck completed her studies in Stockholm in record time and headed to Paris where she trained at the Académie Julian since the Ecole des Beaux-Arts did not yet accept women. Beck settled in France where she spent most of the rest of her life. She gravitated towards rural settings with their motionless waters and verdant backdrops at dawn and dusk when details are indefinite and mysterious. While their spontaneity and brushwork have debts to Impressionism, Julia Beck's images possess a moody undercurrent that is intensely personal. As the present work demonstrates, Julia Beck created a kind of meditative atmosphere in her landscapes through her choice of muted colors, enlivening them with glints of lamplight glowing through the haze and sparkles of stars. When asked why she did not return to live in Sweden, Beck replied, "In Sweden I could never learn to paint the sun – it is so hard to see. The air is clear, oui, but in Normandy the atmosphere is misty and there I could see the sun glittering in the haze and on the sea." HID01801242017
